High flash pistol powder?

Recommended Posts

I recently bought some Glow Ammo dots. They are nothing more than stickers with a glow in the dark coating. I think I got screwed but figured and by the time I returned them I would only get back about $10. Because of this I am going to give them an honest evaluation. I am also going to compare them to some regular glow in the dark paint I have.

In the instructions it says I need fast burning powder and cites Bullseye as the powder to use. The fastest powder I have on hand is Clays which is a bit slower than the Bullseye. But what got me thinking is if it is the flash that "charges" the dots as they are fired then a powder with a large muzzle flash would be just as good.

So is there anyone out there that knows of a 9mm or 45 acp comaptible powder that has a bright muzzle flash?

I don't mind buying the powder but if someone local to me, Knoxville area, that has enough Bullseye or other high flash pistol powder for me to load a few dozen rounds I would gladly meet them.

I am set in the the pistol powder I use, Power Pistol, so buying a different kind would leave me with more to store.

Thanks

Dolomite

Blue Dot is legendary for muzzle flash, though possibly some other powder is even worse. Some people swear by Blue Dot for faster-velocity rounds in 9mm (dunno about .45 but think I've seen Blue Dot .45 recipes).

I've never loaded 9mm with Blue Dot, but in .357 Mag Blue Dot is a freaking flamethower on an overcast day or toward dusk. If I'm shooting my Blue Dot .357 loads toward dusk at the range, other shooters are very impressed with the fireworks (and the near-max Blue Dot loads are obnoxiously loud too).

Hi Dolomite

Thats a shame.

I found this in my previously-saved notes web-searching on loading-- A comment by some fellow re 9mm loads, "If you really want a fireball, its hard to beat Power Pistol and Blue Dot. Blue Dot has provided some of the most accurate high velocity loads I've fired over the years."

So if Power Pistol can't do it with those Glow Ammo dots, maybe it can't be done?

Here's a list I found on the interwebz of 173 different powders listed from fastest to slowest.

Nitro 100 is a very fast powder I use a bit. It used to give a little flash from 45 acp but not too bad.

I wonder how relative burn speed is to flash.

According to Lester, I would say they are not necessarily related like I would have thought.

Hi Caster

I dunno anything about it. Have read people claim that flake powder can have more flash than ball powder. In addition, some powders are specifically advertised as "low flash" and supposedly have additives or treatment to reduce the muzzle flash.

So one might find both low-flash and high-flash powders in all the different burn rates? At least according to some internet discussions.

In 9mm, some loaders don't like using anything much faster than Clays.

To avoid over-pressure in the 9mm, if you are pushing a 124 gr or heavier bullet and want to get to higher velocity levels, the slower powders are said to be better. For light bullets in .380 or 9mm, faster powders are often recommended.

The fastest ones I've used are W231 and Ramshot Zip, which are near the same burn rate and seem to load with similar recipes. Positions 26 and 27 on your posted list.

I loaded a few thousand well-behaved light target loads with W231 and Rainier 124 gr bullets, but then got a stiffer-slide pistol that didn't cycle good on that recipe, and was already using near the max W231 load for 124gr.

So got some Ramshot Silhouette (identical powder to Win Action Pistol, 42 and 43 on your list) that is slower and has a good reputation for pushing the heavier 9mm bullets. Which seems to work OK. Sillhouette is specifically advertised as a low-flash powder though it doesn't matter to me much.

The Blue Dot is the slowest one I've used, at location 60. It seems mostly used for medium-to-heavy bullets in magnum revolvers, though Blue Dot seems less popular for that application than in years past. However, some people claim that it is also very good for heavier .380 and 9mm high-velocity loads.

Assuming the guy knew of what he spoke, naming both Power Pistol and Blue Dot as high-flash powders, that is a big speed difference between location 39 and location 60 on the list. However, they are both Alliant powders, so maybe it is the chemistry or grain that is shared between them, if they both really do tend to be high-flash? I know from experience that the Blue Dot is high-flash.
