What do you guys think of this 9mm 124gr copper jacketed HP? I was thinking of loading these by hand instead of buying HP online. Then again if I'm not really going to save much, may be better off just to buy whole bullets. But I figured if I got into reloading, I could reload my spent brass too, rather than scrap it.

The bullet in the picture somewhat resembles a Hornady XTP in 9mm 124gr.

I think most people who reload, only reload practice ammo and possibly hunting ammo if they hunt.

Though it would probably be fairly easy to reload defense ammo as good quality as run-of-the-mill defense ammo, and possibly with care rivaling premium defense ammo, most reloaders continue to carry factory-loaded defense ammo.

Though reliability/quality may be part of it, most reloaders seem to believe that carrying reloads might open up extra legal liability if one were involved in a defense shooting. Prosecutors or opposing lawyers in a lawsuit could too easily twist it that a person was so obsessed with killing that he went to great efforts manufacturing his own custom evil killer bullets.

I like reloading practice ammo with hollow points just because they make easier-to-see holes in paper targets, but the cost of the components and their accuracy is also a consideration.

If you get a good deal on components you can make your practice or hunting ammo maybe half the price of Walmart generic practice ammo. In addition, if you are careful your handmade ammo will be more accurate than most factory ammo.

However reloading is a fairly labor-intensive thang. Unless you REALLY value saving money, or unless you actually enjoy reloading, then maybe reloading doesn't make a lot of sense. It saves some money, but then again it does cost you some time. Some people's time is worth more than the savings from reloading. It is each person's evaluation to make.

Reloading is a great way to research reliability of your gun.

Midway usually sells bullets by 250.

I use small rifle primers to check robustness of the firing pin.

I load rounds with 5% increment from 75% to 150% value recommended in Hornady book

I set the bullets from - 1.2 mm to + 0.8 mm (from the same book length) with .2mm increment.

Than I go to the range and try all of them. It is a great fun. I can see how the point of impact depends of the load.

Aside from the fun I either build confidence in my gun or sentence it for a trade at the next gun show.
