So has the tools in Middle TN to build an AK?

Apparently all the damn 5.45s, that I was interested in are drying up or getting out of hand price wise..

Sure, if you can find one at a decent price. Seems all the 5.45 used to be around 320-400, are now 500-700.. For that price there's not really an advantage, I can still get 7.62 rifles in the 370+ range.. And there's maybe a 30-40 dollar difference on 5.45 and 7.62 surplus if your google-fu is strong..

Here is one that is listed on Glocktalk for $1,225 plus shipping and handling. It's 7.62x.39. Jez there is a lot I don't know about Ak's, but I like them. Jez I would have never imagined a $1,000 Ak even 3 or 4 months ago. Dunno if it's hype or what but wow!

I think Frontier Firearms in Kingston, TN has a couple of 5.45's and a Saiga (865) 376-0793,

If I remember right most of the Ak's and varients there were around $400 to $599.

It's a drive for you but a good gun store I promise and they are real helpful, call first of course.

The one on Glocktalk is a Bulgarian underfolder built on a milled receiver.(Translation: it is a Porsche) The $400 ones at J&G are stamped Romanian Wasr's(Translation: beat up Volkswagen) The fit and finish of the milled underfolder is more akin to H&K than AK. Unfortunately when most people think of AK's they invision the cheap WASR rifles. The days of cheap AK's,SKS's,Mil-Surp rifles is gone.

Have the better built ones been over $1,000 for sometime? Or is that recent? I'm curious about that cause a lot of people seem to still think Ak's are $300 and $400 and that's the tip top. It's not the truth by any means, but a lot of people still think that.

I have still seem some Wasrs for $350, but as you say Urse they are super duper rough.

Are more companies putting nicer version together now? Cause $500 and up seems more the rule now and there does seem to be a difference.

I may get and underfolder before it's all over. I have a Wasr and a Norinco. Nothing has been done to the Wasr it's pretty rough, the Norinco is pretty sharp looking and has some nice stuff on it.

I love Ak's.

The top quality Kalashnikov's have been $1000+ for quite awhile now. But just like everything else the prices have been going up. Is your Norinco a Mak-90 or a Poly-Tech? Poly-Tech's are going for a grand or more now. The Mak-90's($350-$500) once converted are one of the best deals available in an AK. They are very well built rifles. If the Chinese were allowed to import ammunition and firearms they would dominate the market. Imagine picking up Chinese Kalashnikopies at Wal-Mart. There does seem to be a proliferation of custom AK builders nowadays. I guess this is driven in no small part buy ammunition prices and the availability of comparatively cheap steel cased russian ammo. As far as the perception that all AK's are crap...well that is probably a combination of to many cheap knock offs and America's ARcentric consciousness. I mean after all the AK is the Commie rifle the rifle of the enemy.
