I think some of you guys are just paranoid. I knocked twice on a front door Tuesday at 7:30pm looking for someone who owes me money. Unkown to me people inside called 911 on me. A man came out of the garage and told me to stay right there they had called 911. I told him to call 911 again, because I wanted to talk to them. He then told the 911 operator I was trespassing. I was like, you told me to stay where I was, now you say I am trespassing. Which one is it? If I was a bad guy with intent to do this man harm it would have been so easy.

If someone knocks at your door tell them to leave the property immediately through a closed door. Chances are pretty good they will. If they don't call the police, but stay inside. You are much safer behind a closed door than trying to confront someone outside. If the person hangs around on your property after you told them to leave there is always the chance they will go to jail for criminal trespass.

Seems like something is missing from this story, normal people don't call 911 just because someone is knocking on their door at a reasonable hour.

How do you figure? Seems like most of the stories related here people have mentioned being surprised because it wasn't who/what the expected mainly because they weren't paranoid. The story where the guy got the knife, if I didn't have a firearm, that's what I would have done at 2:00am. Even if the guy says there has been an accident etc....I wouldn't open the door, but would call the law or whoever needed to be called.

Probably 20 years ago, Norfolk, very small apartment, my room mate opened the door when someone knocked one night. 3 (or maybe 4) guys rushed in as soon as he opened the door. The first one through cold-cocked him with a crescent wrench. I happened to be standing in the walk-in closet where I stored my pistol. I grabbed it and spun around to find myself face to face with mr. goodwrench - I practically stuck the pistol up his nose and told him to take his best swing. After a few seconds of yelling that seemed to last hours, they all took off.

After that, I always kept my pistol loaded.

I'm now lucky enough to live somewhat rural. My wife had never fired a gun before she met me, and had refused to consider a carry permit until, while I was at sea, the unwelcome advances and wandering hands of a so-called neighbor convinced her that sometimes the only "no" that gets respect comes from the business end of the muzzle. She now carries every time she leaves the house, and answers the door with a pistol in hand.

Lessons learned: Rural location is no barrier to crime, and an unloaded gun is downright dangerous.
