Recommend a scope and rings for me.

Looking for something that can handle the recoil from a 300RUM. I'd really like something a little more powerful than a 3x9, but not something ridiculous as this will be used mainly for hunting. Is there a big difference between a 40 and a 50? Really looking to stay under $400 but looking for something with a good reticle with a BDC or something close also clarity is a big importance. Would like something that I could also use out west in elk hunting or shots past 500 yards.

Find a Bushnell Elite 4200. You can pay more, but will have to go way up the scale to do better.

This may not be the quality you were looking for but my father-in-law recently gave me a NIKON ProStaff BDC scope 3x9 that is amazing... to my untrained eye and for my uses. Main purpose for me is deer hunting.

The BDC reticle is good to 600yds. if zero'd at 100yds. at the cross hairs. They make other models fashioned for certain calibers but that goes beyond my little knowledge.

It's at least worth the 3 minutes it will take for you to determine if it is right for you.

EDIT: The NIKON ProStaff BDC is a 3-9x40, not 3x9. I apologize for my lack of true expertise in the technical specs.

Thats actually one of the scopes that I've been looking in to. Academy has them for 160 right now I believe. My uncle just put one on his 300WM I believe and says he likes it but didn't know how well a lower priced scope would hold up.

With a full lifetime warranty you may not have to worry too much. Although no one wants to deal with a product that fails and needs replacing every few months. I'm not sure if this is standard for today's scopes but the Zero-Reset Turrets are a really nice feature, I think. Older scopes I have used do not have this feature. It allows for quick adjustments in the field if you feel the need to do such things with the ability to reset to the same zero point after you're done without much question at all.

leupold 4x12 x40 vx2 cost about 300.00 leupold rings about 28.00 leupold mounts about 24.00 why mess with anything else when you can have the standard by which others are judged

you cant beat the elite. its got the bushnell name on it, but its made my bausch and lomb. way superior to anything else in its price range. they're one piece and use awesome glass. leupold in the same class arent close to the scope they are. do some research and then buy an elite. we sell a ton of them at work. im thinking the 4.5-15-50 runs about $370.

The Elite 4200 and VX-II are both good choices, but for the cost, the 4200 is hard to beat. I just got a 4200 3-9x40 for $149 from Cabelas on super sale. Hard to beat for that price. Even a 4-12 will not be too bad on price. I have many VX-II's as well, but for hunting I like my 4200's. Can't go wrong typically with Leupold bases and rings.

I've checked out the 4200 and it seems like a pretty solid rig. I'm just still pretty torn between the 4 or 6x. The gun will mainly be used for hunting so I don't want to get something too powerful and not be able to see much at the close shots, but I still want to be able to have confidence when zooming out past 300 yards.
