Finally got back to looking at it. Freshened up the solder connections around the crystal but it didn't fix the issue.

The Chrony company was back from vacation when I called today, no wait to talk to a tech. The gadget is still under warranty. The tech was friendly and agreed it sounded like a defective crystal. Offered either I send the gadget to them, or they send me a new crystal fer free.

So I had em drop a crystal in the mail. Also ordered a spare "brain" remote unit which they charged $45 for. There isn't much to go wrong with the steel chassis and optical sensors in the main unit, unless or until you shoot it to pieces. Assuming the crystal fixes the old brain, will have a backup, and if not will still have a working unit with the new brain.

Other times I used that F1 Master Chrony it worked pretty good and made reliable measurements. Some people complain about too many error codes and some don't.

If it starts being too much a PITA, will probably try one of those ProChrono boxes.

Can't complain about the service.
