Flying with a handgun

Thanks Hero Gear,

That brings up something else - I know you have to show them the gun is unloaded so I assume you have to remove the gun from the box and rack the slide. I don't especially feel comfortable doing that in a building with people standing around. Seems to go against my comfort level with safety concerns. But I guess you gotta do what ya gotta do.

Any thoughts on where to store the ammo? In the Mfg box inside the suitcase, not locked up seperately?

You can store the ammo WITH the gun, so long as it is in a box (like the factory ammo box) or in the magazine.

A good friend of mine experienced the loss of his Colt Python by an airline a few years ago. I woiuld think twice before putting it in checked luggage.

Out of curiosity do you know if the tag that said there was a firearm was inside or outside the suitcase?

I have heard of this happening when the used to put the firearm tag on the outside. It is my understanding know the put the tag on the inside of the suitcase next to container with the firearm, so baggage handlers, etc... won't know there is a firearm in a particular bag.

wonder what that would do to the new weight charges... it could cost you more then you are ready for... just an FYI 2 beware of.

Just saw on the news there charging 15 bucks extra for checked luggage.I think it would be cheaper to mail your bags to the hotel. And wouldnt that be legal (with no FFL) since your mailing it to yourself?

As long as it’s not the U.S. Postal service it’s legal. (handgun) Federal law requires that you notify the shipper if you are shipping a firearm. That means your bag would have to go overnight with UPS or FedEx. I doubt you can do that for $15. Also you couldn’t ship any ammo with it.

I traveled United last year, out West. Colorado, Montana. No problems.Billings , Montana "did not blink an eye". Several people had guns more impressive than my Ruger Alaskan 454,backpack gun.Once I checked the gun, they allowed me to place the gun case in my big, checked baggage, so it didn't "stick-out".

Keep in mind that you are dealing a variety of people and variety of intelligence levels.
