USPSA or IDPA or BOTH ???

Tad, ease up, dude.

I've shot exactly two stages of IPSC. It was a ton of fun, but very very foreign.

I really don't understand people who are militant IDPA-only types, or USPSA-only types. They're both a lot of fun. You're not exactly painting IDPA shooters in a positive light over here... ;)

I initially told the OP to go try both and see what he likes for himself.

I 'played' USPSA yesterday... which means that this month I have played both games, in order to make a comparison.

USPSA was far more fast-paced, challenging and fun. I liked it because the stages were set up to require problem solving in order to succeed, it wasn't simply some repetetive sequence which everyone had to do. It was obvious right away that the skill required to excel at USPSA is an order of magnitude higher than for IDPA. In IDPA and 3-gun I came in green and placed in the middle of the pack first time, in USPSA yesterday I was happy to be 3rd from the bottom out of 18 or so... and I feel really good about how I shot (plenty of points, just a slower time).

It rained nearly the whole time, we were all soaking wet... but I've never had more fun shooting than I did yesterday. Marty and Rick got me set up and made sure I knew what was going on, they deserve my public thanks for making it an awesome experience for me. I got to see some excellent shooters and some sweet pistols (I want an Open gun now), can't wait for next month. I found my game.

I guess I will try both for a while using my 1911 and see if I like one more than the other.

Thanks for all the input

molon, what types of guns did everybody use?

Lots of tricked out STIs and other double stack 1911s, like this:

There were 2 XDs (one was mine), both performed well and I was told that the XD was becoming very popular as factory and aftermarket parts were becoming common... I think I saw somebody shooting with a Witness or or CZ (also tricked out). There was a stock Glock there, but nobody was using it.

Actually, the only comment I heard regarding Glocks from anybody was that they "couldn't even use them as a hammer to nail the target stands together because they would miss the nails"... I thought that was a bit harsh, but their 1911s were having no problems (well, I did see one ftf due to a mangled reload). And there were alot of rounds put downrange that day, compared to the other games I've seen.

Its funny you go to different USPSA clubs and they have different "popular" divisions.

Memphis seems to have a lot of open guns. NTPS in Dixion has a lot of Limited guns (2011/1911). Friend from out of state says Production took over and most the club shoots it now.

I would think IDPA is the same way, mostly cdp-1911 or ssp-glocks etc.

It's funny how that works.Chattanooga Rifle Club has an unsantioned monthly match. You can shoot two guns,Auto and Revolver. It is nothing to have 6-10 people shoot revolver.I have never seen that many at any other club.

The main division that now shoots at ORSA is Production. The Open shooters have faded away.....me included. Several of us now are going to Single Stack.
