Rust Removal

Recommended Posts

I need to remove surface rust from the exterior of a blued 870 barrel (grandfather's shotgun, been in storage for 20 years, cleaning it up for dad). The blue is still in great shape, so I want to be as gentle as possible.

What are the best methods / got any good tips?

There is a product called Blue Wonder gun cleaner. It removes surface rust with a passing over it with a patch and no steel wool. This is some of the best stuff I have ever used for cleaning. It does not remove the blueing. I am down to my last little bit. It is hard to find in the store. But on there website it gives you a locator.

I've always just wrapped the parts with surface rust on them in an oil rag and let it sit for a day or 2 reoiling the rag anytime I passed by then with a coarse nylon brush and oil I'd give it a good scrubbing.

Oh and don't store the gun in a traditional padded gun case. They absorb moisture from the air and hold it close to the barrel. I learned this the hard way.

I picked up a tube at Franklin Gun, and I'm converted! Not only did it help with rust, it's been great at removing years of caked up grime. I wholeheartedly recommend this stuff for any serious cleaning job.
