To +p, or not to +p - my search-fu did not help me.

I was hoping to get some input on something that has been on my mind for a few days now. I have a SW1911 Sub-compact, and a lot of Hornady TAP +p ammunition. The only thing that I can find is that Smith and Wesson doesn't recommend using +p ammunition (as opposed to recommends against).

I just jumped all over a Midway offer on Golden Saber 185 grain regular ammo deal (it was $16 a box), so I'll have something to shoot.

I'm wondering though...should I hang on to the +p stuff that I have, or try to re-home it. It other words: Should I avoid using +p ammo in a modern subcompact 1911? You input is greatly appreciated.

I have as a rule of thumb gone by Ruger’s statement "we do not recommend a steady diet of" withmodern firearms unless they specifically state no +P.

I would use the +p for social work, and your golden sabre for general purpose. Just make sure you know where both impact in regards to point of aim. Really doubt you will damage the pistol unless you shoot a buttload of +p's.

They also suggest against handloads etc.

I own a 1962 Colt Detective Special and it has 6 rounds of +P in it.... now when I go to the range I do not shoot +Ps as a general rule...but when it comes time to rotate ammo I will send those 6 downrange to get a feel for the added recoil etc.

Once you know it works with that ammo reliably you can shoot other ammo in practice and fill it up with your defensive ammo

I have found the difference in Std. and +P ammo in my pistols to be a small part of the whole shooting experience during practice,.. shooting fast and without thinking about it it almost feels the same to me on my end however if I load up and concentrate on the actual shot being fired it seems quite different.

I have run heavy loads in the past through a Colt Officers Model and it was a handful any way you sliced it...

My thought on +P or not to +P is that if +Ps toss you around and your shot placement/recovery between shots is affected I would prefer 3 controlled hits to 2 with a long delay in between..and suggest the std. if on the other hand you can drive the gun with +Ps then by all means use the extra horsepower.

in the end ..... only hits count....

If you want to feed it more than the occasional powerhouse round, put in a stronger spring. Otherwise, save the +p to carry, shoot regular stuff.

The +p TAP 230 is a bit spicy out of a three inch barrel...I can still use it though.

You can run +P...I called Smith after I purchased the weapon. The tech said it was fine with the bull barrel.
