Magnification, Help!

I really need some advice on a magnifier. I am trying to choose between a 3x, 5x, and 7x magnifier for my AR-15 and it's going to be on a flip to side mount. I'm mounting it behind an Aimpoint if that makes any difference. I'm not really even sure how accurate my rifle is at long range. Anyone have an idea of the effective range of a Colt 6940? I'm not an expert marksman by any means nor do I intend to be. I'd just like to be able to see what I'm shooting at at longer ranges.

Back home, I was easily able to hit a torso sized gong at 200 yards with my Eotech by covering the target with the dot. With the Aimpoint, I can turn the brightness way down and have a more precise dot.

I'm planning on using the RDS for 15-150 yards and hoping a magnifier will help me with anything past that. I was originally planning on getting a 3x magnifier and ordered one but it was back-ordered a month so I canceled. Now that I have the option, I'm wondering if I should go with a more powerful magnification since I'm spending the money anyway. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to order today! :koolaid:

why not get an adjustable one? Most of my scopes are 3-7 or similar, good for everything from 25 to 200 or more yards. They also come in a low variation that is 1-4 or 2-6 ranges and higher variations that are 15-25 or something like that. The numbers are not exact but you get the general idea.

Well, the 3x is back-ordered for a reason, the reason seems to be that's what everyone wants.

I imagine some of TGO's former Army door-kickers would have an opinion on this. . . .

They do make magnifiers with adjustable magnification. That is you can get a magnifier that has a range of 2x-5x for use behind a red dot. Seems like this would fit the bill for most AR users.

LUCID Magnifiers

They are getting decent reviews and are considered one of the better deals out their because of their reasonable pricing.
