If so, whats your call sign, and where do you monitor most often?

I am a new license (had it for a couple of weeks) and am looking for new contacts.

I spend most my time on the air from 10:30pm and later. My call sign is KJ4CTS and I tend to bounce between short mountain (146.910) and K4FUN (145.230).

I'm not, but I'm a truck driver with a Connex 4600 Turbo. I know it has some buttons and knobs that allow me to use other channels (besides 1-40), but I have no idea how to use them.

I am looking to get a Technician Level test taken care of and a portable 2 meter setup in the future but I am just not able to afford everything right now. Well the money could be found but the time to study is at a real premium right now.

AG4WI , I live in Lawrenceburg and there's not much going on around here with Amateur Radio. I have 2-M = 220-mhz. and 440-mhz. I sold my HF radio sinse i didn't use it anymore. Welcome to Amateur Radio it is a great hobby.

If you can get your family to get involved it is a lot of fun.

Ok so, probably a dumb question since I don't know anything about this kind of stuff, but what's the appeal? I mean what can you do with them? Just talk to people? Not trying to sound like a jackass, just I always hear people talking about radios and tests and licenses and don't really have a clue what they're talking about.

bk, I've been wanting to get into this for awhile. With the right setup, you can transmit, receive/monitor transmissions from all over the world. A lot of these guys have setups with battery/generator backup that let them run when power is out, i.e. Katrina. I grew up around some amateur radio guys and just never spent the money for my own equipment.

There are many aspects to amateur radio. A couple of the most important ones are that radio works in emergencies when the phone system, including cell phones, are down. Also, you can, literally, talk to any place in the world, as long as the propagation gods allow and there's someone there on the amateur bands.

I have confirmed contacts with all 50 states and over 100 foreign countries. I've never used more than 100 watts of power, and have worked France while mobile with 12 watts on a converted CB (that I built!).

Some hams get into building their own gear, some are big in emergency communications, some like to chase DX, some like to use the amateur satellites or do moonbounce. Some just like to gab.

When you have the time, drift over to www. arrl. org and look around for a while. Licenses no longer require morse code knowledge, study materials are readily available and you usually can take the test at your local ham club.
