Watching a show called Hairy Bikers and on this episode they went wild mushroom hunting. Its a cooking show for guys, on History. Anyway, anyone here hunt for wild mushrooms? I'm not after the psychedelic ones, I learned how to find those from an old pothead friend, but I've never had the compunction to try those. I'm looking for someone in Mid-TN that can show/teach me what to look for, which are tasty, edible, and poisonous. Anyone know any good links also?

I have always been curious but too chicken to try it before. Now I'm curious and thinking of going at it. I know what Morels look like and just waiting for the season to come around. I've been walking through wooded areas quite a bit lately working on my photography skills and thought it'd be a good hobby to tie in with it.

I absolutely love eating mushrooms. My favorite are shiitakes. My Dad made a pork sausage stuffed shiitake recipe that was awesome. If anyone knows what they're talking about and wants to go on a hunt, hit me up with a PM. I'm free most any time and my littlest one enjoys the walks.

Find a friend that is not very smart to help you. I once worked with a guy that harvested wild mushrooms all the time. Evidently some dangerous ones look like the safe ones. He ate the wrong kind and was having crazy hallucinations. So have a dumb friend eat them first, if he seems okay after a few hours then you are probably good to go.

My great Grandmother died due to eating the wrong Shrooms, be careful and like 10 said bring a friend that is not very smart and you do not like very much.

LMAO! The dumb friend idea is funny. My options for shroom hunting buddies abound.

I don't intend on eating the poisonous ones, or the psilocybanic ones either. Of course, no one intends to eat the wrong ones, unless they're looking for a wild trip. I have no plans for psychedelic trips, my Drs wouldn't approved, one would kick me out of his practice for good. Hence the reason I'm looking for someone knowledgeable.

False morel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gyromitra esculenta, one of several species known as a "false morel"

The name false morel is given to a number of Ascomycete fungi of the genera Gyromitra, Helvella, and Verpa which bear a resemblance to the highly regarded true morels of the genus Morchella. Like Morchella, false morels are members of the Pezizales, but within that group represent several unrelated taxa scattered through the families Morchellaceae, Discinaceae, and Helvellaceae.

The edibility of "false morels" has been recently brought into question. While many people eat them without apparent harm, some people have developed acute toxicity and recent evidence suggests that there may be long-term health risks as well.

My wife and I have found a sweet spot for morels. Last year we picked over 7 pounds and 5 of them being in a single day. The best part about the area we now search is they seem to be much larger than most of the other areas we have looked. About the most flavorful way I have found to fix them is fried. The stems tend to hold most of the flavor as well. I have tried them in sauces but their flavor tends to be muted some.

When exactly does Morel season begin? What is the best type of wooded area to search for them?

I seem to recall the general rule of thumb is the first rain after the Redbuds start blooming (up home they call it "Redbud Summer"). Look in hardwood stands, especially oak and ash. (Up home, in Kansas, we'd look for a mixed stand of Oak and Cottonwood.) Take a good walking stick - given the copperheads in Tn. it's better to clear away leaves with a stick than to use your hand.

For more info you might check out this site: Morelsworldwide.com or this one: Morel mushroom hunting

Good luck!

I lived for a spell in Oregon, where you have to have a license to gather Morels. Just like a hunting license. I suppose there's an ID test in the licensing process to prove you can tell a morel from an impersonator.

Anyway, if a game warden there catches you with poisonous mushrooms in your poke, he'll seize them but there's no further penalty. But if he catches you with psychotropic mushrooms, he'll arrest you.

So there's no penalty for possession of mushrooms that could send you to God but the ones that just make you see him will get you a stay in the crossbar motel. Go figure.

The hippies at "the farm" in Summertown will sell you a piece of log with plugs seeded with mushroom spores, morels, s-h-i-t-akes, and other more exotic varieties. Just put the log in a cool, damp place and wait. Harvest at the right time and you dislodge more spores back onto the log.

Hadda spell it s-h-i-t-akes to get it past the forum censor, LoL. It's a fair bet the webmaster does not have a Matsus-h-i-ta TV.

LOL. I did the same thing. I used Google to check my spelling and found that its Shiitake. I thought tripping the word censor was funny though.
