Looking for a new bolt gun...

I kinda want a new bolt action rifle. I been looking at the Savage model 12 BVSS in caliber 223. I want to use this rifle to punch holes in paper at 2 and 3 hundred yards. Buds has this gun for $781 it's the best price I have found. Do you have any comments on this rifle? Is there a better rifle for the money that I should consider? Don

I read a website recently about a guy that was building a 1000 yard rifle for less than 500.00. It was interesting.

You could kill paper at that range for a fraction of that price, I am certain of it. Savage makes a very good gun (I have not held this model, but others), but if that one does not come with a scope on it already (and it may, I didnt look) it seems awfully high for a 223 plinker. Is this for "serious" paper killing (competition, even if just against yourself), or just for fun??

A quick search says you can get a 223 rem 700, which is very nice, for around $500, and a couple of the other savage models are also less. Again, I couldnt tell you why one is more than another, but you should be able to get a BA 223 for $500 or very close to it.

My Savage Model 10LE in .308 is incredibly accurate. 7/8" at 100yds with Hornady Match off of just a cheap front bipod and no rear rest. And that was my first time shooting it. I bought it used, so it was a good deal, but I've seen them retail for around $650. Now, the one you are looking has a high grade stock, and fluted stainless heavy barrel. So it will be priced higher. I've spent more for a "pretty" gun and been happy with the extra cost. I'd say it would be a great gun, for paper, rodents, even game up to deer with the right ammo. Plenty of accuracy for the shot placement.
