Picked up a used XD 40 about week ago and stopped by On Target yesterday to put some rounds through it. The darn thing FTF clip after clip. It would fire once and jam. fire, jam...The ammo was bulk UMC from Bass Pro. Any advice other than don't use this ammo anymore. Could this be something serious that I should take in and have it looked at?

Thanks

Dont use that ammo anymore.

OK, outside of that, it is probably a magazine issue. Get a new magazine for it, a factory mag. New. Not something made in Dirkadirkastan you picked up for $5 at a gun show. Take the gun apart and clean it well. Scrub down with CLP or similar cleaner/lubricant. Check the feedramp for burrs or whatever.

That's a bad mag, or an improperly seated mag.... possibly in conjunction with that ammo, but that's not likely. It would be a good idea to try another brand just to see. But for sure get some new factory magazines.

Just out of curiousity, what does the bottom of the magazine base-plates say?

I have 3 of them and they all say Springfield Armory on the bottom. Two of them have a logo with Springfield Armory produkt Karlovac (yes thats how it's spelled) Croatia. all three mags FTF could not narrow it down to a specific one.

Sounds like weak magazine springs... the mags might just be very old. Have you tried letting anyone else shoot the gun, just to see if something you are doing might be contributing to the problem? (please don't take offense, that's simply a good suggestion for diagnosing problems for someone's gun I've never seen shoot) Weak mags do seem to make a gun more suceptible to limp-wristing. Mag springs are cheap... matter of fact most parts for the XD are (www.pistolgear.com has pretty much any factory replacement part you could need).

Other than that, take advantage of the XD's lifetime warranty!

Also it could be the slide stop spring (if an XD has such a thing) my Eaa Witness did the same thing and after replacing a mag spring (wolffsprings), recoil spring, and changing ammo brands that is what actually fixed it(took to a gunsmith and he determined the slide stop spring was the bad part).

That could be, if the slide stop is actually engaging prematurely. But if the slide is coming forward enough to stop against the cartridge which is nose-dived against the feed-ramp, it's something else.

Not sure if it would be weak springs. The magazines are very stiff to load. They hold 12 rounds but after the 10th it is very difficult to compress the spring to get the remaining 2 rounds in...I tried loading the magazines with different round counts in them to see if that would make any difference. Didn't seem to make any.

Thanks everyone for your input it's much appreciated..

The feed profile for an XD is nearly straight-in... So, for the cartridge to jam on the ramp, it has to be nose-diving. That's almost always a mag problem... either the wrong mag (ie, using a 9mm mag in a .40), or weak springs/bad follower/bent lips. For all of the mags you are using to do the same thing is rather strange, especially since you say they feel like the springs provide plenty of tension. It's possible that the feed ramp is very rough or damaged, but that would be evident when looking at it.

Clean the gun thoroughly, and disassemble the mags and clean them inside as well. Give it some lubrication (in the mags too), and try a different brand of ammo. Have another person try shooting the gun, as well. If the problem persists after all of that, your best best is Springfield Armory customer service... they can turn it around to work like new. Everybody makes a lemon on occassion... but methinks this pistol is just worn out or poorly maintained. I've put well over 10Krd through the XDs that I've had, without a single failure to feed (did have to replace a broken pin in one of them, but it worked broken until I noticed it).
