Lee Classic Loader

I have used a progressive press for a couple of decades primarly for loading 9mm. I have never loaded rifle and I have always wanted to try the little Lee Classic Loader.....the kind that you load with a hammer. I stumbled across one in 30-30 for $15 at a gun show recently and tried it out tonight. I really had a lot of fun with it. I think I just enjoyed the simplicity. It would be easy to throw in a range bag and tweak loads at the range. This sure is the other extreme from my progressive press, but it was lots of fun.

How easy is it to use? I've just bought one for myself to try reloading .45-70

I've never reloaded anything in my life, but I saw a guy using one of these on Youtube & it looked really simple compared to using a press.

I have used them to load .357 and .45 auto. It is easy, slow, and meticulous.

If i tried i could do 50 rounds in an hour.

What i did not care for was seating primers. It is pretty easy to pop one. I bouught a Lee primer tool to use instead of the hammer method.

Robatto, it was simple to use. My 9 year old loaded a couple with my help. The lee online instructions were not good, but a youtube video was helpful for me as well. It is slow, but I will probably only shoot 20 or so 30-30 rounds per year, so for $15 it was perfect for my needs.

Lee does make a hand press. I used to take it to the range with a small scale but sometimes I just used the Lee dippers. It worked really well and could use regular dies.

I use classic loaders and dippers for .30-06 and 7.62x54R, and will be getting one for .223 soon. Once you get the hang of it, you can load fairly quickly. I find it relaxing, in a way... you know, once you get over the fact that you are hitting a live round with a hammer...
