Some things just have to be put out the night before. Wrap it & stow it flat in some obscure place for a few weeks. If the gun comes apart, you can take it out of the box, put it into a different box with the barrel off, that really helps. You can also do the old card trick.... give them a card or small box in their stocking, inside it has a note "go look under your bed" or something silly.

hide it some where and wrap a small box with a note in it telling them where their gift is located (e.g. under the couch, under the bed, in the closet)...

Put it in several boxes, each one slightly larger then the last. Then wrap it in several layers of wrapping paper. Even if it's still roughly the same shape and they figure out what they're getting, it'll throw 'em for a loop when they open layer after layer.

When I bought my Dad a Ruger No.1 for Christmas a few years ago I gave him a box of .338 ammo. When he opened it up he told me he didn't have a .338. About that time I had my brother walk out with his new gun. It only works if the person who is getting the gift doesnt already have a gun in the same cailber that they are getting.

This is how I did it... but had several notes hidden in different places, scavenger hunt style.
