Poaching story and taxidermy question.

Recommended Posts

A good friend of mine lives here in the Nashville area but hunts a family farm in western KY. There are only two people allowed to hunt on the farm, himself and his nephew. Neither one of them bow hunt but go to the farm every few weeks just to check on things. Well on one trip up there a couple of months back they had heard that someone had shot a pretty good deer on thier farm with a bow but didn't find it. So they rode around a little that weekend but didn't find anything. They didn't think anymore of it.

Fast foward to this past weekend. My friend is in his 70's so he gets in the blind and stays there the entire hunt. His nephew was out walking around when he came across the deer they they think the poacher shot. He is an 11 pointer and pretty good in my book. So my buddy brought it back to Nashville and decided he didn't want to mess with it and he gave the skull to me.

I want to do a European style skull mount. I have never done any kind of taxidermy, but didn't figure this would be too hard of a project. The only thing I am worried about is that there is still velvet on the base of the antlers. So what do I need to start this process and how difficult do you guys think it will be?

Pics of skull.

I have only done 1, but I found a step by step online. I remember I first cut and scraped away all I could then boiled the skull. There was a mixture of Elmer's glue that I coated the skull with at the end. It wasn't hard but I did it over a few weekends as time allowed. I was in Florida at the time so the very first thing I did was stick it in a fire ant bed. Yours looks about like mine did coming out of the ant bed.
