Got my renewal notice several weeks ago. I immediately sent in my $50. Took about three weeks, and I got a notice in the mail saying my fee had been recieved, and to keep that notice with me as proof of renewal until the actual permit comes. The real one arrived less than a week later.

If you renew at the DMV, the copy of the paperwork you keep serves as your receipt (and works with your expired permit to keep you legal for a specified period of time). If you renew via mail, they send you a letter that serves the same purpose.

I don't think either way improves the wait time.

BTW, I renewed via mail a couple of months ago. Took between 3-4 weeks mailbox to mailbox (I was out of town when it arrived, so I can't be certain if it was 3 or 4 weeks).

Mine renews in 2012. What exactly is the renewal procedure? I was under the impression that you had to renew at DMV which I was dreading like the plague!

You can request the forms from the HCP office and they will mail them to you. Just fill them out and mail them with a check. You can renew 6 months prior to your current expiration date. You can request a duplicate permit at the same time - just make sure you get two applications if you want a duplicate. They require a separate application for a dup.
