I bought some ammo today at Wal-Mart and noticed that 10 cents per box of ammo was added to the total price. What kind of tax is this and how long has this been going on?

There should have been 10 cent tax stamp stickers ON the boxes. Maybe they do it different but the tax is rolled into our price and everything out for sale must have the stamp on it.

TN has the .10 tax for good many years now, don't remember when it started.

It was put in there for the TWRA, supposed to be totally dedicated to them.

Most places don't show a separate charge for it on ticket like Walmart does, but all in state sellers must pay it, and hence pass it along to customer. And yeah, the sticker has to be on each individual box, even if you bought a case with all the smaller boxes inside.

Matter of fact, I had to wait for a bit at Academy a couple months ago, got a case of Monarch, but the guy had to pull all the individual boxes and put the stamps on, as hadn't hit the shelves yet.

How is the Monarch ammo compared to Wolf or Bear ammo. I've been thinking of getting a few boxes of .223 to try out.

Shoots fine in my 2 Mini 14s. Seems about as hot as anything else I generally shoot (Wolf, Tula, and including the Federal brass stuff).

Note that it's lacquer coated though, 'bout the last stuff I see around that still is, 'cept for Brown Bear.

The $.10 tax has been there for many, many years. I can just barely remember when it was a 5 cent tax. It does go to TWRA.

I could be mistaken, but I believe it may be a federal tax that comes back to state natural resource agencies. Do a search for the Pittman Robertson Act. I majored in wildlife and fisheries in college, but that was a long time ago.

Pittman-Robertson (1937) and Wallop-Breaux (1950) Acts are separate deals from the TN state .10 tax. The funds from those federal acts are distributed to all the states.
