I have used Johnsons Paste Wax for years. Inexpensive and it is basically Carnuba wax, and not a petroleum based product. For more serious protection and improved appearance I use boiled linseed oil, which can be found in about any hardware store.

I use Birchwood Casey Stock Sheen and Conditioner. The stuff works great and has some mild abrasives in it. I have even used it to remove marker, pen and crayon marks on the wood furniture by the little ones. They make an entire line for stocks which most professionals use.

Old English Lemon Oil (which some say is mostly ordinary mineral oil) works pretty good on lots of woods, unless there is something special about stocks.

I second the Birchwood Casey Stock Sheen and Conditioner. I have used it to clean several of my stocks, and it made a noticeable difference. It probably won't do as much for a newer stock with one of the "wonder finishes", but it does work well on the older ones.

I used Johnsons Paste Wax on the M14, years ago when I was at Fort Polk. I'd love to have that stock now. The stock I'm refinishing now was in rough shape when I got it. I'm going to try the Birchwood Casey Stock Sheen and Conditioner on it.
