Cook Convention Center

Has anyone been to the Cook Convention Center recently? Are there metal detectors?

Julie and I were down there about a year ago to pick up our registration stuff for the St. Jude Half. I didn't see any metal detectors at the time, but this was the only event going on at the time. What are you going to be attending down there?

Going for jury duty. I get that it's illegal to carry in a courtroom, but this is just the date selections. I'm also kind of assuming they will consider this a courtroom while we are there.

Looks like you're not planning on carrying, but to be a bit more clear...

39-17-1306 says it is illegal to carry in any room where a judicial proceeding is taking place. So that doesn't automatically mean courtrooms if a county commission meeting is going on and it does mean a hospital room if a hearing or deposition is taking place.

So no matter the room if just selection or anything to do with a jury is going on...it would be a safe bet that is a judicial proceeding and illegal to carry wherever it occurs.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. I guess it (maybe) could be argued that this isn't an official judicial proceding, but then it could be argued that it is also, so I'm going to err on the side of not going to jail.

I've heard about the big jury duty stuff at Cook Conv Center. It is quite a circus from people I know who have gone there. I don't think it would be legal because it is a 'judicial proceeding'. Normally (except the huge jury duty circus) there is no law keeping you from carrying at Cook as far as I know and I've never heard of metal detectors. I would normally conceal (like any govt. type place in Memphis) just to keep from being asked to leave.

I did have to take my spouse to a jury duty selection in the county clerk's building downtown Memphis, carried, but did not enter in the jury selection room because that would have been a no no. Cook would be the same thing the way I understand it.

I have heard rumors that 201 Poplar will hold a gun for you but never had the priviledge to go there to call or find out. If anyone knows that might be helpful especially for people who have to do jury duty at 201 Poplar or lawyers that go there.

I seem to recall that there is some provision which allows you to leave your weapons checked with the officers of the court, but I don't know what it is off the top of my head. In theory it would apply to both the civil and criminal courts. That said, I have never actually seen anything at the courts which would indicate that it's a legitimate possibility, and I haven't ever felt like asking would be a comfortable proposition. I just accept that I will need to disarm before going to court. And hell, I even leave my keys in the office. I have been given more sh*t than you would believe over the bottle opener I have on my ring...

I'm not 100 percent sure, but I'm relatively sure you cannot check a gun at 201. I have checked a gun before at 150 Washington, but now they no longer have metal detectors at that building.
