Bad Deal on Hunting on a Property Line

Recommended Posts

Well...After waiting all year for my favorite part of hunting season...I get to the woods an hr early, get in my ground blind and patiently wait. Aprox. 8:50am a very nice size doe comes out and gets within 20 yds. I decide to harvest the deer. Due to her being so close, walking toward me i had to make a difficult shot however was a succesful shot. The deer runs 40 yards and falls. The property I was hunting on belongs to a friend of mine so we have went over the boundaries several times. This particular spot where the deer has been seen frequently was within 50 yds of the property line. The deer took 1 jump over the fence after being shot tried another jump and fell into a low gap of the property. After waiting a few minutes making sure she was dead, I got up, walked straight over to where i saw her drop and much to my surprise someone was in a distance sitting in a tree stand. He stopped me abt 3 ft from the fence and would not let me retrieve my game. I'm sure the fact that we were so close to one another and neither knew it probably had him in a bad mood, however, he was hunting the line just as I was. And not allowing me to walk 5 yds on his property to get the deer i shot was a little on the childish side...just my opinion. I've hunted since I was a kid and has never had a person not let me get a deer that I shot. Needless to say, I went back after he left the woods and my deer was gone. Anyone ever had this happen?

WTF!

Nope. Never happened to me. I have never been denied retrieval of game. Crazy! Bright side is you can think, it is not being wasted. I would hope anyways.

Sorry man. I'd get with the land owner and have him/her sqaure it out for you with the other landowner. Avoid confrontation and take the high road. Or give the guy the finger next time you see him and you are dragging a huge buck away from the area. Either way a win. Na, do the first suggestion and think about doing the second. ;)

And your signature? :)

Trying to redeem yourself??? ;)

No I can not say as I have had to deal with that.... sounds like a case of Pen*s envy to me. :D

I did in fact get with my buddy afterwards. The story gets even worse. The guy that denied my retreaval of my deer didnt own the property he was on either. The land owner of that side of the fence doesnt even hunt. In the words of Ron White: "that spun me in a state of p!ssed off that i havent been to in my life". I'm very nonconfrontational if at all possible however this hit quite a nerve.

I am not a hunter but what was he going to do if you just went and got it?

Good question. My friend that owned the land I was hunting on said the same thing. At the time, standing in the middle of the woods with a guy in which i have no clue of who it was and what state of mind he was in was really trying to avoid him. However, knowing what I do now, like him not even owning the property that he was on, I would have gutted the deer under his stand so he get to walk through it when he came down from the tree.

So did you get the blessing to retrieve your bounty in the future and or run the other smuck off?

Both... If i were guessing..now that the landowner of the property he was on heard about what happened, i doubt that he has a place to hunt at least there for the rest of the season. That sounds kinda like i tattled on him like a kid but the alternative stuff that came to my mind after the fact wasnt a very "responsible" thing to due.

If I'm not mistaken a game warden can retrieve game in the situation that you describe whereas you can see the game from the property line and the landowner will not let you retrieve it. I had a neighbor that I am good friends with have this happen to him, he shot the deer and tracked it to another neighbors field, he could see the deer dead so he went to the neighbors house and asked his permission to retrieve his deer, surprisingly my neighbor would not allow him to get it, he's just that way. My buddy told him that he would be back with the game warden and at that point he was allowed to get his deer. If that happened to me I think I would have pulled out my cell and called it in right there if I had service.

you know, that really never crossed my mind at the time but know that you mention it, that would have been a great idea. I for sure will keep this in mind.
