Good News:

On Sat Oct. 15th I was finally able to take the HCP course. On Mon. the 17th I went to the DMV and also had fingerprints done. I received my HCP today! 19 days from the day I took my course. Not bad. I figured mine might take longer as I have lived in 3 different states in the last seven years. Thought it might take longer for background checks.

Bad News:

I start a 6 mo. long work assignment in IL starting the 14th of this month. :)

Oh well, we all do what we can.

Congrats, I guess the only place you can carry is inside your place of residence in IL.

Congrats on the permit,

I don't think he will be able to carry at "home" as he is not just passing through he would need a FOID card and I do not believe he would get one as he is not a permanent resident

CAN I KEEP A FIREARM IN MY HOTEL ROOM WHEN I TRAVEL?

Yes, assuming no local ordinance applies. The critical question is how the firearm was carried into the room and transported in a vehicle. Those actions must be done lawfully.

This is why I question it; LDRider is going there for a six month work assignment not just traveling through.

As a non resident he does not need a FOID to posses his firearm and ammo as long as he legally able to own and posses in his state of residence (barring Local bans). But would the courts view a sixth month assignment as travelling?

Even under "travelling" the moment he does anything not in line with his intended business interest like go to a movie, stop at the park or sit and read the newspaper at McDonalds he has lost the limited Federal Protection afforded us.

I can just see certain Illinois districts trying to prosecute under this premise from their track record.

Examples from other states;

The PEOPLE of the State of New York, Plaintiff, v. Sergiy SELYUKOV, Defendant

Missouri v. Baker, 639 S.W.2d 617 (Mo.App. S.D., 1982) ]

Birch v. Texas, 948 S.W.2d 880 (Tex.App.-San Antonio, 1997).

Well I don't think the question on the handout limits it to traveling though IL but applies even if IL if your final destination.

All that said I agree that they can do about anything they want it seems as local ordnance are not preempted by state law.

If it was me and I wanted to bring my handgun while staying there I would contact the ISP for advice and try to get a formal letter if they said it was ok. Plus check about any local ordnances where I would actually be staying...

+1 here

I might be willing to be a guinea pig on a few things in a few states but not in IL.

Thanks for all the kind words and advice.

I'd like to not have to work there but I was working in St. Louis and was laid off in late Feb. We (wife, dog, & I) moved to our cabin we already owned here in Sevierville. I have not been able to find a job in my profession since moving here (including Knoxville). I was able to get a temp. job (similar to the one in IL) in GA for 4 mos. that ended the beginning of Oct. This helped to get caught up on some bills and get credit cards paid off. This 6 mo. assignment would have helped us to get some money stashed so it would be easier to tolerate being out of work for a bit. At this point, I really can't be too choosy about where I work.

Continuing in the good news/bad news vein, I found out that the job in IL. won't be happening so I won't be going there. Of course, I still need a source of income.

Oh well!

I travel to Illinois with a bunch of guns all the time. But then I live on the edge and have even been known to run with scissors.

As long as you are a resident of another state you don’t need a FOID card; they apply to Illinois residents only.

You can even buy ammo in Illinois; just don’t expect the cashier at Wal-Mart to know that.

Illinois laws for transportation are about the same as they are here for a Tennessee resident that hasn’t bought a permit.

Having lived and worked in St. Louis I was well aware of the idiocy that is IL and firearms.

There is no question that we have appreciated being in TN since we moved here. We bought the cabin here for a reason. ;)

Thanks again for the well wishes.

Wishing you all the best LD.

While no one that I know would want to go through much less live in IL, it says a lot that you would take a job there to support yourself. There are far too many these days who would not work no matter what their situation was. Then again if you were one of those you likely would not be here on TGO;)

All I can say about the roller coaster is that I have found in my half century+ of life that things happen for a reason. Hopefully this means that you will be in the right place at the right time to take advantage of an even better job offer.
