Or we could just make it simple and refer to them as "modern rifles".

You can come up with whatever PC term you like, but the anti's are always going to use the scariest term they can think of, as will their minions in the press, and for now it's assault weapon.

homeland defense rifle works for labeling a hunting rifle, but a better name should be assault deterrent devices aka A.D.D.

This seems comparable to Nancy Pelosi wanting to rename the "Public Option" in the health care reform bill. It didn't change any minds. We need to stand up and defend our 2nd amendment rights rather than trying to fool liberals by renaming assault rifles.
