Remington model 597 .22

One word on ammo, your gun may or may not shoot the Remington bulk ammo well. ...

The Remington Golden Bullets have been the pits for the last couple years. Inconsistent load, mainly. Bang, phfft, bang bang bang phftt, etc .

The screw i n posts will work for carrying a rifle with a sling. But i don't see them holding up to using the sling for support during shooting.

Might or might not, depends on thickness of the plastic where it goes in, dunno about that gun. Ruger 10/22 plastic stock models come with them, seem to be screw in type.

They make them with bolt/nut type, also flat keeper nuts if the nut in barrel channel touches barrel, etc.

On my 597, where the sling mount post screws in on the forend there is a cylindrical plug about 3/4 of an inch thick molded into the stock that the screw bores into. Before I installed the sling mount, I filled the void in the stock around this plug with JB Weld in order to strengthen it and keep the plastic from splitting when I screwed in the sling stud. This worked very well for me, made the whole thing a lot sturdier.

No, it didn't take much at all. Actually, I used the JB Weld KwikSteel Stik, and it only took about 1/3 to 1/2 of a package to completely fill the void around the post. Added weight is negligible. Cost for a tube of JB Weld putty is what, like $5 or so.

I have a 597 that I really like. I like it enough that my BL-22 lives in the safe and my 597 sees near daily duty. Hey I would feel bad if I treated that little Browning the way I treat this 597. I picked mine up for $50 with a case and scope from a friend that wanted rid of it. It sat in a corner for a couple of years I was just going to sell it to someone who needed it, then I started playing around with it. It had a lot of reliability issues so I stripped it down and gave it a good cleaning. It's run the last 1000 +/- bulk rounds flawlessly. Best $50 I ever spent on a rifle.

Hey guys,

Picked up a clear 30-rd Remington mag for the 597. It accepted 30 rounds, then a 31st, and probably could have put a 32nd. How do you know when you're at 30 without actually counting every batch of 30 rounds? Put a sharpie mark on the side of the mag? And if you get 31 or 32 will it damage the spring eventually?

Also do you guys use mostly 10 or 30 rnd mags? I guess I'll stick with 2x10 and 1x30 until I find out what I might use more of.

I really don't count, I just feel it till its full. Never really thought about it.
