Several different Gallup polls related to guns. Definite changes over the years.

Record-Low 26% in U.S. Favor Handgun Ban

One scary view of the first poll mentioned is that 1 in 4 people would ban handgun possession by individuals "other than by police and other authorized people". I suspect they don't think of permit holders as being "other authorized people" and that's a big improvement compared to previous results.

Kind of shows how things are improving in most areas while still being pathetically out of whack with the intent of the 2nd Amendment.

I was 5 when they say they asked that question the first time, but I doubt anyone other

than a die hard socialist was against guns back then. These bastards have driven this

agenda forever, and I don't think it has ever been a real issue, except in the eyes of the

media and certain politicians. They pushed this so much for so long that they mainstreamed

it. If these same bastards quit talking about it, it would probably go away.

It's not the gun, stupid!( not you, PapaB:D)

It all depends on the location. If 5,000 people from say Illinois answered and only 10 people from Tennessee it's going to be skewed. Guns are a normal part of our society down here. Most of us were shooting guns before we were in school.

Yes, what you say is correct, but Gallup and other similar reputable polling groups try very hard to draw a proper random sample to prevent that sort of problem. If one of these polling groups was caught intentionally trying to skew a poll, their money tree would dry up in a hurry, so it's in their economic interest to do things the right way.

According to the Gallup website regarding this survey:

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted Oct. 6-9, 2011, with a random sample of 1,005 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points.

Well said.

You may find that liberals are more likely to answer a survey like this than conservatives are but that wouldn't skew the results by anything outside the margin of error because they watch for that also.

What I found most fascinating about the results is that those who are college educated are LESS likely to favor additional gun control laws than those who are not.

hmmm...the headline reads a bit differently from "74% of Americans oppose a handgun ban."
