Gun shop woes

So I'm in a local gunshop buying a new gun. Filling out paper work, looking over my new purchase and such. When walks in a customer. I recognize his voice but don't know from where. He is bringing in a Keltec to be looked at.

After a few minutes of overhearing the conversation I determine he is LEO. So as he is getting his Keltec check out, he has the muzzle pointed in my direction and dry fires the gun. I look over and think WTF, really did you just do that.

I know I should have confronted both the store person and the customer, but I got my stuff and got out of there.

Rant, I'm sick and tired of going to a gun store and having all sorts of safety violations. I just can't believe more people are not accidentally shot at gun stores.

Rant off, now I feel better.

I just didn't want to blow up in front of a LEO, and I did see him clear the gun, but I'm sure people get killed every day from an "unloaded" gun.

WHY? They are no different than any of us....Oh wait YES THEY ARE! They are trained (supposedly) and should be held to a higher standard. Not that anyone should get a pass to proper muzzle discipline.

Now I'm not trying to start cop bashing garbage, that's just ridiculous, but you could have done it with respect. I would have.

Honestly, I would have walked up and just asked;

"Do you realize you just pointed that pistol at me and pulled the trigger?"

If it started a fight, oh well. I wonder what his supervisor would have to say about it???

I understand. I was helping out in a friends shop the other day and a customer pointed her trade in at me several times. I finally told her she needed to remember her muzzle discipline. I was polite and she didn't take offense.

I know I should have, I just looked over in Horror and was just speechless. It's my own fault for not saying anything. I guess I just had to rant to get it off my chest.

I just can't imagine working in a shop. I'm sure it goes on every day, maybe they get immune to it. For me, I never do. Muzzle discipline is the first step to safety. You can never hurt anyone if you know exactly where the muzzle is pointed.

I will call out anyone, LEO or other who displays a lack of muzzle discipline. I called out a gun shop worker several years ago in front of the owner. The owner said nothing at the time but the worker has not been there since.

Well, I can certainly understand your "Horror" There was a time when I wouldn't say anything. Especially at a gunshow. Then I got to thinking, what are they gonna do about it?

You're right about muzzle discipline. Too bad everyone can't be so receptive to a simple concept of dire importance.

Probably suspend him for carrying a Keltec. :)

Seriously though, there are idiots in every job; cops aren’t exempt. If a cop got in a fight over anything as stupid as being called out for being reckless there would probably be serious consequences.

I should make it perfectly clear that by using the word "FIGHT" I meant a war of words and NO MORE. Your side of the story looses it's weight when you're explaining it through steel bars.

So, it's against the law to call a cop an idiot?

Nope, not even for shooting him a bird. It might not be the right thing to do but you can. No law is broken, but it might hurt the cop's feelings.

I often have a hard time finding a "clear" place to point a perspective purchase in some of the crowded shops. That being said i've never filled my sights with another human being. Scary as hell to think a LEO would do such a thing, absent minded or not.

My wife and were in a shop recently when a customer brought in a small gun to get worked on. The shop worker was handed the gun and he racked the slide, dropped the mag and pulled the trigger (yes in that order). This was done while it was pointed at my wife. I was in the back when this happened and didn't find out until after we had left. She told me she got onto the shop worker. He had already swept her once with another gun a little earlier and she she got onto him for that. The second time she got mad and jumped onto him about it. His response "This is a gun shop get used to it".

That is the kind of attitude that gets people hurt. We should never get used to unsafe practices.

My wife is very aware of muzzle discipline and if anything is even remotely pointing her way she lets the person know. Doesn't happen very often so when it does it is a big deal.

I'd go back and talk to the owner. Tell them what happened and let them know you expect a safer shopping environment. I'd also let them know that, if their employees don't remind customers about muzzle discipline, you'll notify several hundred gun owners you know about their unsafe practices. If they don't take care of the problem, name names.

msparks, I just have to ask. How much trouble do you get into that you recognize LEO's by their voice? :biglol:

I would of said something about it. I understand it is hard to not get swept by a muzzle at gun shows or stores, but pulling the trigger adds another layer of danger. what an idiot.

Long story, but I have a very good memory for voices and faces--names not so much. So when I heard the guy talk I knew I heard him before. Seems one day a couple years ago they were doing one of those round up deals and was after my neighbor for something (I never did figure out what) anyhow the guy came over and asked if I knew where she was. I did not and that was the end of it. (Like it's any of my business where my neighbor is)

So that's where I knew him from, then I heard him chatting up with the salesman about some sorta of LEO stuff. That was about the extent of it.

I can count on one hand my run in with the law and that includes traffic violations.
