What is the advantage to doing this as opposed to just buying slugs?

Cost would be one of the advantages. You can use the cheap $6 a box of 25 ammo. Another would be overpenetration. Slugs will go through someone but these would likely come apart in the target and never exit. Think of them as Glazer Safety Slugs for a shotgun :)

Here's one of the uses. I have 40lbs of beeswax with no use for it. I also have 50 rounds of birdshot leftover from a tactical shotgun class that I have no use for other then blasting out of the double barrel for fun as I don't hunt YET. I now have a way to increase my 12 gauge stockpile of slugs and buck by 50 shells without spending a dime. OH! I BET I COULD DO THE SAME THING WITH MY LEFTOVER SLUGS, BUCK, AND BIRD IN .410!

Interesting concept, but destroying the hull by cutting seems stupid. It renders it useless after one shot. I might be inclined to try this, but I'd keep the hull intact and crimp properly. Then I won't have to worry about a pellet getting loose in the gun as he warned and I could be assured proper feed and function.
