Pick something that you enjoy doing, it will make it easier because it's something you're passionate about, you have knowledge of, and you'll come off as being informed about your subject, which will make it easier to give the speech.

I did mine on storm/tornado chasing when I took my speech class in summer of 09. Teacher thought I was literally nuts and needed to be put in an insane asylum. :D

Pick a subject that isn't too controversal to the instructor or other students who will deciding your grade. You don't wasnt your grade based on their personnal feelings toward the subject matter of the speech. I learned this the hard way during a speech class many years ago.

+1 Pick something innocuous so as not to allow your opinion to cloud your hard work; especially if that opinion isn't popular with everyone. Also, pick something arbitrary that you don't know much about. It gives you the opportunity to learn something new.

How about "I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop!" And then give well reasoned and well thought out information on the necessity of responsible gun ownership in America. Keep it light, but informative and impassioned and maintain your integrity at all times. You may not convince anybody, but then again, you might!

Luck!

I agree with both WyattEarp and tnhawk. Pick a subject you like, it will add passion to your speech, but don't make it a controversial subject.

You could do something like "the knowledge and relationships gained through the use of specialized social media (in other words, forums).

Don't use my speech on "The most beautiful thing I've ever seen." Here it is in its entirety.

"The most beautiful thing I've ever seen was simply too beautiful for words."

Professors don't generally have a sense of humor.

OK, serious suggestion for non-controversial, but possibly interesting topics-

Do a review on a cultural event. A production at the local community playhouse (usually you can watch rehersals for free, and talk to the actors), read the book its based on if possible (example 'Golden Pond'. Or, go to a cultural festival in your area (Beal Street, Presley Mansion, steam train ride, national historical park, etc. Interview actors, portrayers, participants. Remember your W's of communications, and look for the hook.

What is the topic for the assignment?

"How to"?

"Informative"?

"Controversial"?

"Persuasive"?

Those are most of the general types of speeches assigned. I took my speech class a year and a half ago. I did them on the following...

How to change oil in a car

The amount of pollution a Toyota Prius actually makes

Why strict gun states (areas) are more dangerous than non-strict states (areas)

and I can't remember the last one.
