Am i the only one on here who did not feel inconvenienced or put upon having to take a class to get the permit? Mine lasted about nine hours or a little more. I totally enjoyed the experience and would not have minded at all if it had gone another day and had involved a lot more range time.

Except for the instructors, yes...you are the only one. :D

Nope Mike.357 you are not the only one, I remember clearly (not sure how) that day, I was in the garage and I bent down to pick up something that had fallen and when I came back up I hit my head on the banister to the steps that led to the kitchen, I hit it with a vengence if you can only imagine and the blood was pouring, I managed to get to the kitchen and my cell phone and call my husband at work to tell him I was passing out ;) and I was crying :D because I thought I wasn't gonna get to go to my class. Ha! I got the bleeding stopped, hubby flew home to check on me and I went to class anyway. I had a headache but I still passed and hated to see it end, I ate it up, because ya see, I was completely new to handguns and it was my desire to learn how to be safe with it.

Personally I believe that it should be our right to keep and bear arms without class because the constitution didn't say we had to take a class first but IMO the class is good for those of us that haven't had experience with guns and we should want to get training so that we can be safe first and proficient next. I go to the range as often as I can get there to continue practicing so that I can get better with my aim.

I didn't mind. I've been shooting and into guns a long time, but any excuse to go to a range, or to talk about guns, or to pretty much in general have anything to do with guns I'm all for it. Now I take issue with paying the $115 to the state, I can't for the life of me figure out where that goes. I know they have to pay the fingerprint vendor and do the criminal check and take your picture, etc, etc, etc but $115 for that?

I didn't mind the class, although it was shorter than I thought it should be.

However when I took my class it was right at the time that they started doing the "electronic" fingerprints and I had to pay the 115.00 plus was charged 70.00 for my fingerprints.:D I got a feeling I was scammed out of 70.00 but nothing I can do about it now.

Wow...sure does sound like a scam, when I filled out my application at the DL station they made sure to tell me the fingerprinting was included in the fee, and when I went online to get the appointment to set it up they also stated the fee was included...that stinks. Most likely the person doing the fingerprinting was some idiot that had no idea what they were doing and charged you anyways....:D

Right you are. I was told by my instructor to be sure to wait until after you went to the DMV to do your finger printing cause they would give you a number to call and that your finger prints were included. He did however state that you could go somewhere beforehand and pay a fee. However, I thought I had read a law stating that you couldn't be charged more than $5. I'll have to look that up when I have a few more min.

dralarms, did you get them done at the new place in Athens? DMV told me to be sure to tell them that I had already paid when I paid my $115 because it was included. Somewhere there was a lack of communication and you lost $70, that stinks.

The HCP course is supposed to teach the laws about carrying your gun...not the tactics.

there are other classes for that.

that said, mine was 8.5 hrs, the instructors were extermely nice, and knowledgable, they corrected the outdated video, they taught on the laws of self defense, and where and when you can legally carry. It was well executed.

oh, and I got 100% on both written, and shooting. :)

Those that are taking the class to learn proper shooting techniques, should be in a class that specifically teaches those areas.

oh......

HAPPY EASTER!!!!

I've had my carry permit for around 10 years now. Things must have changed a lot since I got mine.......my fingerprints were taken at the DMV the same day I applied for my permit. Also.....I could swear that when I took my class, they told us that the gun HAD to be carried concealed. Have the laws changed since then or was I mistaken?

Where the finger printing is done has changed.... Mine was also done at the Drivers License Station over 10 years ago.

The law on open or concealed carry has not changed at all since it was first passed. You have always been allowed to Open Carry if you chose to. My instructor told us it was legal. However it does seem most LEO's encourage concealed carry.

I had my prints done at the DL office too, by the old ink method. Over the years I must have done that 20 times.

But the law has changed over the years about concealed carry. Someone posted the whole story on this board somewhere.

Originally, your concealed carry permit was approved or not by your local sheriff (at his whim). When some sheriffs refused to be reasonable, the Legislature took that power from them and put the program in the hands of the DOS as shall issue. At the same time, to prevent further abuse by LE, they made the permit just carry and not concealed carry..

That's true...I was speaking of since the current permit system has been in place. AFAIK Since the State has issued HCP's you did not have to carry concealed. I never had a permit from the sheriff, was working on it when the State HCP law came out.
