That's based on the article mentioned in this thread. http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/handguns/63126-firearms-violence-tennessee.html

Brian Hass wrote what I think is a dishonest piece based on faulty data without notifying the reader of the problems with the data used.

The FBI stats say they're only based on info "from agencies within each state for which supplemental data (i.e., weapon information) were reported to the FBI" (I added the bold effect) but that isn't mentioned in the article. Instead the reader is led to believe that the data is complete and valid.

Some have mentioned that the writer has been fair before, IMO he didn't come close this time. See my comments in the linked thread at number 93 for a fuller explanation.

The article also cites the Violence Policy Center, which is a very biased anti-gun group, worse than the Brady Center in my opinion. They also mention a fellow from "academia" who is far from it. He has a Master's Degree in criminal justice, which is typically not research based degree, and works for the LEIC, which does not do research on violence or crime causation. Funny that they chose this fellow over any of the criminologists with PhDs at the University of Tennesee who do reasearch on this sort of thing.

Considering that I am a criminologist as well, I guess I need to pick apart these numbers myself and see what the scoop is.

Several fellas made excellent statistical/methodological comments in that thread at http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/handguns/63126-firearms-violence-tennessee-2.html , including Mike Gideon, PapaB, and many others.

My most concise comment was message #75 though I made a couple of earlier "flailing around" messages at #47 and #59.

Anytime some research artical or report cites Brady or VPC or Mayors Against Illegal Guns as factual data, the report or artical automatically becomes opinion and unqualified as being a factual/credible report. You might as well trust Al Jezera to do a credible report on Jewish/Palistinian issues.

Anyway, if Tennessee has a high occurance of gun crime it has nothing to do with gun ownership, it has everything to do with cities like Memphis and Nashville with large areas of poor getto neighborhoods, gangs and drugs etc. Any city with a high crime rate will have a high occurance of gun crime no matter what their gun laws are, parts of Chicago, L.A., Detroit im sure have a high occurance of gun crime simply because they have a high occurance of crime itself like Memphis.

And I'm sure you would do a good job of it, but don't you think starting off with his information

and numbers would still end up with some false conclusions? John Lott's study, over a long period of time, showed mostly downward trends in gun violence overall. His was an exhaustive study,

too, wasn't it?

What I'm getting at is the information in the latest tripe in the fishwrapper is just that, tripe. I really even wonder if FBI data is any good, because of the various reporting. Kinda like political polls, depends on who takes them and when and where. Trends are good enough for me and are probably easier to get at.

Fishwrappers are always going to print political tripe anyway. The only thing I look at on USA Today(which is about it for me) is the upper right corner of the front page and that's only if it

is a pretty female:D That's not even reliable.

I agree air brushing and news print can do wonders.
