No big surprise. Everything I have read has had many reports of the hydra-shok having more expanding issues than most other modern rounds. Due to the center post inside the hollowpoint, it clogs even worse than most other rounds. The hydra-shok is actually a pretty old round, it was designed in the 80s. If you are looking to carry a federal round, I have heard good things about the federal HST. I personally would not carry the hydra-shok if other options were presented to me.

In the grand scheme of things, I will probably never need to use the rounds in my gun for defense. Assuming I use it in winter and the rounds do not expand, I will not be worried. I will still concentrate on shot placement, ball ammo can stop a threat just as easily as a jhp.

Shoot once, then follow up with the the remaining bullets in the magazine and you have solved any expansion issues.

I used to swap ammo weights based upon season many, many moons ago but don't anymore. Ammo is designed much better now than 15-20 years ago.

Although it does have clog issues I use the Winchester PDX in my 45 and use FTX rounds in my 9mm regardless of season.

I know I wasan't the OP, but thanks folks for the answers. I started to read this post thinking it would be a complete flame fest but was pleasantly surprised at the information being shared.

For anyone interested, TNoutdoor9 has some really nice videos of "homemade" ballistics tests on youtube. I think he often does them through 4 layers of denim over a simulated ballistics gel (and used to do them into wet newspaper filled milk jugs).

hornady critical defense rounds are made just for this, check one out next time your at your local gun shop

That's what I use year round is Hornady Critical Defense in 9mm.

I made the switch to Horaday FTX for the above reasons. ..........first round is still the Glaser Silver safety slug just in case my point shooting was off target during the adrenaline dump.

This is very interesting.. I honestly would have never thought of this. So I'm actually kind of confused. During winter months and heavy clothing, would it be better to have a faster FPS round such as like a 9mm or 357? I have always sworn by .45 but after reading that article, it seemed like the .45 JPH fell short to the FMJ. I still plan on carrying a .45 during the winter months, but I'm guessing it will be in FMJ now. Or correct me if I'm backasswards.

The effect of clothing on a .45ACP would be minuscule. However, the difference in .45 FMJ and JHP is substantial.

Velocity means nothing by itself; you need mass and surface area also. Ideally you would have a large surface area with jagged sharp edges, with a lot of mass, moving at a speed that would cause it to expel all its energy in the body without passing through.

The idea is to stop the threat by making your attacker unable or unwilling to return fire with a hit to center body mass.

The other school of thought is shot placement. There are those who during a gunfight are going to place their shots so that they turn the bad guys off like a switch. Caliber, physics nor ballistics is as important in this case. The drawback to this approach is finding out whether or not you have the ability and control to accomplish the task.

Short version: Stick with your JHP’s for carry and use the FMJ at the range.
