Background check on long guns?

Recommended Posts

This afternoon when I bought my new 10/22, I had to fill out the background check info and pay my $10.00. I don't remember having to do that before when buying a long gun, but then again that was many years ago since I bought one... Has the age minimun changed too? Did I need the BG check at all?

4473 became federal law when you were one year old.

The $10 is a TN state fee though, began in 1998.

I think the background check for long guns has been in place since 1998. Fortunately we don't have to wait 15 days anymore. I can remember that. I thought the waiting period was one of the stupidest and nauseating laws out there at the time.

Sort of. As I get it, federally began in 1994 as per first Brady Act iteration, along with 5 day waiting period for handguns -- federal waiting period and local checks sunsetted in 1998 with creation of NICS. Some states still have a waiting period, though.

Was that 15 day waiting period a TN thing? All during those many years the only gun stuff I did was FTF, so I don't know.

I guess my last long gun purchase was in the 80's or early 90's. I can recall a Marlin 30-30 lever gun and my favorite Marlin Model 60 .22.

This is all making me feel a little old!

You are correct about the Brady Act. The 15 day thing was a Tennessee law for purchase of a new or used handgun from a dealer. The thought behind it was so people wouldn't get mad, rush out and buy a handgun and then go shoot the one they were mad at, I guess. It didn't matter for long guns. You just filled out the 4473 and walked out with your purchase. They of course, dropped the waiting period when the State went to the instant check, thank God!

I bought a Marlin Model 60 back in 78 from a box store called China Town. I don't know about it all anymore but I remember having to fill out some kind of form to take ownership. Dunno what is was anymore. Long dang time ago.
