The recoil isn't a problem. Its just uncomfortable. I don't like the feel of the grip, the buttstock hurts, and the hand guard is too wide for my small hands to grip onto effectively. When I aim I feel too much strain in my neck. I guess im a hunting rifle guy through and through....

Maybe you should have bought a Mini 14. An AR does have a different feel. Does it still have all the stock stuff on it? The magpul stuff feels a lot better, especially the handguard.

Thinner handguard and rear grip. Never heard of a buttstock on a AR hurting but they do make buttpads

I absolutely despise those big round handguards. Like grabbing somebody's leg. Not a fan of the cheesey stocks either. All four of my stocks are Magpul... four different models depending on the purpose of the rifle. You need to give it another spin with the Magpul furniture. When it comes to feel, my favorite grip is the Hogue. Nothing wrong with the Magpul. I have them on my carbines.

The factory grips can be uncomfortable. I personally can't stand the MIAD grips as they tire my hands because they are so wife and flat. Try replacing the factory grip with a Hogue or some sort of Ergo grip. Makes for a much nicer feeling gun. Now I only use the Hogue ergo style grip. Or you could just pick up a few extra factory grips and sand them until they feel comfortable. Most people have them laying around and would probably give them to you to help you out.

As far as the handguards there are a couple of cheap options. Get a cheap bolt on rail, they are generally less than $10, then add either a vertical grip or a off brand angled forgrip, either of those are about $25. If you don't mind going a bit more expensive get a free float tube as they tend to be thinner. You can get free float tubes for under $50. Or if you don;t mind just replacing the handguards there are plenty of good ones out there that are thinner than the factory CAR handguards.

For the buttstock they do make risers that bolt on that give it a little height as well as width. Or you could find a few AR owners and try theirs to see if there is anything you like. Once you find one you like it is literally a 10 second job to replace them on a collapsible stock. I don't mind the factory collapsible stocks because they are about the lightest collapsible you are going to find. There are dozens of stocks for the AR, I am sure you can find one that feels good to you.

The Magpul stuff he already has on order will fix a lot of his problem. The MOE grip is about the same as the MIAD. We agree on the Hogue. If you don't like that, you need to look into getting your hand replaced.
