A friend of mine has a felony from the 80’s involving drugs and a well known gun attorney told him he could get an expungement, but it wouldn’t get his gun rights back in TN.

Your friend may be confusing expungement with resoration of rights. Expungement destroys the public records of a case that was dismissed--whether by diversion, not guilty verdict or dismissal for other reasons.

If the friend had a felony, it sounds like there's a conviction. Too late. He can have his rights restored for voting or serving on a jury. But firearm rights won't be restored.
