Greetings from Knoxville

Greetings from K-town. I've recently been looking for my first pistol for home defense and target shooting. Found this site while browsing the web for gun reviews and such. I haven't decided exactly what gun to get yet, but I've narrowed it down with the following parameters - 9mm, steel (or maybe alloy frame. No poly's), external hammer, safety and/or decocker, 4" barrel. I am open to suggestions, but my preferences are pretty much fixed.

So far, I've liked the feel of the Baby Eagle 2 (semi-compact) and a few 1911's (Kimber and Dan Wesson). I wanted to ask if anyone in the Knoxville area might have a Baby Eagle/Jericho 9mm that I could fire? I'd be glad to meet you at a local range and buy you a box of ammo for your trouble :). I'm leaning towards the BE2 over the more expensive 1911's because even though everyone raves about their 1911's, I'm not sure I want my first gun to be one that you have to run 500-2000 rounds through just to "break it in".

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Jason

Welcome!

Have a look at the Ruger P-series. They're inexpensive, very reliable, quite accurate, and meet all your criteria. I believe there's a nice Beretta 92 for sale here now. The CZ75 series are good as well. Coal Creek Armory has a long list of rentals available.

I've held the Ruger P89 and P94 but both are discontinued as far as I can find. The P95 is poly so I'm not thrilled with it. I've shot my brother's Taurus 9(something) which is similar if not the same as a Beretta. It shot ok, but it didn't "thrill" me... I've checked into the CZ's but it's hard to find the compact versions in full steel. I've been to CCA a few times. Plan on going next week to shoot a Dan Wesson Guardian 9mm they have in the rental case at the moment.

Thanks for the thoughts :)

I have an old, beat up P85 with eleventy gillion rounds down the barrel that shoots better groups than I can.

The CZ RAMI comes in both a polymer frame and steel frame version. A friend has the steel frame RAMI and likes it.

Have you tried a Sig P226 or P229 (4.4" for P226 and 3.9" for P229)? If you would like to try one, Coal Creek Armory has a P226 9mm in their rental shelf that shoots amazingly well. I actually went there and shot it and that was the deciding factor on getting it as my first handgun.

Welcome, Jason. +1 for CZ, they're easy to shoot and very accurate.
