Muzzle Brake for Remington 700P .308

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering which muzzle brake i need to buy for my remington 700P .308 caliber (its the older 24" Bull Barrel). I have decided to get a Badger Ordnance FTE Removable muzzle brake.

They come in 3 sizes:

SKU# BO306-38 for 3/4-28 thread and .875†minimum barrel diameter.

SKU# BO306-38B for 5/8-24 thread and fits barrels at least .800" diameter.

SKU# BO306-38C for 3/4-24 thread and .875†minimum barrel diameter.

So which one do i need? Plus any "competent gunsmiths" who can install this and also install a badger ordnance tac knob on the above gun? I live in Clarksville if that helps, and I am planning on this upgrade this December.

5/8-24 is the standard for 308 caliber guns.

As far as a competent gunsmith I can't recommend any in your area. I will say that this would be a cakewalk for Predator Custom SHop in Knoxville.

I am not affiliated with them in any way. They have done a lot fo work for me over the years and all of it has been perfect. They are also one of the more reasonable "custom" shops around.

I'd go with the 5/8-24 if your barrel is .8 at the length you want to install it. I'm not sure what taper you have on your model but if you have calipers you should be able to get the measurements. Typically the thread extension is .5 to .6 depending on the manufacturers specs of the muzzle break/flash hider, etc ( I'm basing that off of Gemtech's specs for thread extensions). So, measure that far back from your muzzle (.5/.6) and then make your measurement of the barrels diameter and that is what you got to deal with. I'm sure you could see what badger has for their specs of this product and adjust the aforementioned formula a bit to get your answer or a better idea at least.

Also you could shorten the barrel as well to get to the .8 diameter if the "blend" is that important to you or in some cases the muzzle attachment can be blended down. As Dolomite suggested. 5/8-24 is the norm. Excluding a few suppressor companies, it is the standard diameter & TPI for many silencers, etc. Options are nice. I have re-threaded quite a bit of other 30 cal thread extensions, to the 5/8-24TPI when the owner changed his mind about the attachment.

Threading bolt knobs is a breeze.

Thanks. After reading your post i decided to do measurements.

My barrell is actually 25" measured while its screwed in (i bought it used so i don't know if its the stock 26" cut down or if it's considered 26 with the threads on the inside).

With calipers this means:

25": .828

24": .832

23": .837

So for my next project I'm going to get a gunsmith to thread the barrel for 5/8-24, install the removable muzzle (just make sure it aligns the right way with the threads) and install my tactical knob. I'll probably go with MidTn if they can do it, they are closer than anyone else. This will be a January project btw along with an AICS 1.5/2.0 stock or Manners T5A Stock (which i will need bedded also). Thanks everyone for the input, now my only question is the age old... AICS or Manners?

Is this the orgininal barrel?

If not, have you shot it yet?

If it is not the barrel that came on the gun you need to get the headspace checked before you do shoot it. Not all Remington barrels headspace correctly when moved from gun to gun. And getting them corrected takes a gunsmith and some time on a lathe.

I would hate for the headspace to be loose and the thing blow up in your face.

You measure from the bolt face to the muzzle/crown (or I should say thats where the law measures :( ). Close the bolt, stick in a dowel rod/cleaning rod till it touches the bolt face, make a mark on the rod, retract and measure. You most likely have a 26" factory barreled rifle.

Oops. Your right.

Quote deleted at Guntroll's request.

I do know Savages are 20 TPI. Not sure what book it is but it is wrong unless they are talking about some much older models I have not heard about. I do know anything made on the model 10 and 110 are 20 TPI. I have threaded a few barrels and all have been done in 20 TPI. The small shank guns have the same 1.06 OD and have a variable length because they use the nut.

Glad your the expert here ;) . I hate this page of difficult columns in my book. I was looking at the savage 110 but typed out the info for a Sharps Borchardt rifle.

Either way info sharing is done here on TGO.
