.44 Mag hunting ammo

I recently purchased a Ruger SRH .44 REM MAG, with scope, from another TGO member. I would like to try hunting with it this fall.

I need suggestions on the type of ammo some of you would use. I will be hunting whitetail, in the woods, at ranges not over 50 yards.

I'm fond of a 240 grain jacketed soft nose. I use the theory that if the deer is in range for a bow, it's in range for a .44 mag. This particular round does well for me.

I also use 240gr JSP (WWB).

I have a scoped 7.5" Super Blackhawk and non-scoped 4.5" SBH. I get more range out of the 7.5" of course, but inside of 50yds both guns are highly effective with that round.

You can get the JSP from right at 200 grains up to a little over 300. Mine are 300. Its a fairly simple bullet design so I suspect one brand is much like another with minor differences in velocity and your choice of the weight.

Try a good JSP 200+gr or two and give a go with at least one good hardcast load then take whichever you shoot most accurately hunting. I've personally grown fond of 300gr hardcast over stout loads of W296 in my Redhawk. (Though if I can this season I plan on trying to bag one with the .500)

Good luck and remember...accuracy nearly always trumps caliber/bullet selection.

I have had a lot of first hand experience with Hornady 300 grain XTPs. I used them on hogs for a number of years with excellent results. If your gun will shoot them, they are a good choice. I am sure the 240gr version would be just as good on deer.

240 gr. has served me well in the past. Year before last I shot one at about 65yds. knocked him flat on his a$$.
