southpaw shooting an AR

Well...I finally got an AR which I love. I'm just getting into this world and I must say, already im rackin up my wish list for things to get. However, being left handed and not researching much on that side of the gun, I'm finding that the brass consistanly is hitting my right cheek...which stands to reason due to me being on the right side of the gun. I'm sure there is, but does anyone on here have any experience with eliminating this problem fairly easy? Dont even say it! I have tried shooting it right handed and its just no fun. The gun itself I love and feels great to shoot. I just never really thought of having this problem when I was looking at them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You guys have taught me several things since I have been on here!

Thanks,

Travis

so if it is a slick side, a brass defecter as mike said or replace the recieve that has one.

and as strange as it may sound, try a different brand of ammo, for me i have notice that different brands for what ever reason eject at different points. some fly more forward than others.

like if your shooting 223 try some 5.56 etc.

I am assuming you probably have a "sport" model type AR with no brass deflector & forward assist? That is probably why you are getting smacked in the face, most AR's will eject more straight to the side or slightly forward due to the brass deflector. I would probably get that deflector that mounts on the rail that mike suggested.

I'm a lefty and have shot ARs for several years and as long as it is not a slick side I have not had a reoccurring problem with brass hitting my face. I have had a random one here or there go down my shirt. The only thing that has been a reoccurring problem for me would be inhaling the gases or a freshly oiled gun throwing oil in my face. This was a larger problem when I was in the Army and they would just hose down your weapon with CLP in a spray bottle. The only thing I can say is find a good pair of eye pro and wear a hat, that might help protect some of your face.

My 10 yo son shoots a DPMS Sportical that is a slick side(no brass deflector hump) and hasn't had any problems with brass hitting his face. He is right handed but left master eyed and I have taught him to shoot left handed. A 'GOOD' AR smith can modify the ejector button with a bevel to angle the brass ejection path more straight to the side or slightly forward. Your other choices are the left handed upper or some sort of clamp-on accessory brass deflector. Good luck- it would be distracting and uncomfortable for me to have hot brass impacting my face ever time I fired a round. TTT

thanks guys. I think I have found the fix. I called the place where I bought my AR and explained the situation. The only said he had the exact same condition as well. He is right handed but shoot lefty. He said that he sent his to a smith and explained the situation. He said he dropped it off and by lunch he had it fixed. The guy didnt charge him anything to fix it so it must be simple.
