Lost him eight years ago today. An American icon in my opinion.

The Man.

There is no other like him. One of the few momories I have of my dad is hearing "Burning Ring of Fire" while driving around with him.

Some of the best memories of my grandfather was going camping in a '76 Bluebird school bus, listening to that song on 8 track. That's right. 8 track baby!

For me Cash is one of those that could sing anyone's song and I would have liked it.

Who would have thought he would have done some NIN ,lol.

Heh I liked him too, more as I got older. I do remember the irony of my parents, mom liked elvis, dad liked cash, and both of em one day lectured me about the "crap" I was listening to who were "a bunch of drug addicts". One of the rare moments when one gets to school their parents, priceless. I love my folks but they were, like any parents, occasionally irrational :D JC had a real talent for taking a weakly performed song and making it awesome, rusty cage is a great example, so is Hurt. I hate most covers, and even moreso country covers of rock, and yet these are some of the best remakes ever. Social distortion beat or tied him on ring of fire though, but they are also exceptionally good.

I actually like his newer stuff better. His older stuff is good, but as he aged, his voice just took on a rustic quality that I really dig.

I saw him in 89 at the Del Mar fairgrounds and that is still one of my favorite concerts. And I even sat through REO Speedwagon to JC. LOL

I found a ton of his songs on Grooveshark. I listened to Cash all day long at work yesterday. Didn't realize how much I like him. I particularly like the songs that tell a story.

I think the songs that tell stories is what makes him so great. He is a good singer but not outstanding.
