55 Gal steel barrel/drum source

Anybody know of a source for 55 gallon steel drums in the Nashville area? I want to make a BBQ smoker, and I can't believe they are so hard to find in the Nashville area.

Do you ever check the classifieds online? I know there are individuals that pickup used drums from chemicals companies. We have several that pickup from us. If you were closer, I would give you one.

Look for a water heater. They are better steel and easier to find. You can find them in different sizes as well. You don't have to worry about what was in them either.

I got six off of craiglist last year for $6 each. Guy out of Dickson Co has a steady supply of them. Not sure I would want to eat anything that ever was cooked in the ones I got though....liquid plastic nastiness.

Just an FYI on this. I'm in the chemical biz and have access to various drums. A number of years ago I hand built a BBQ grill using the heaviest gauge available. It still was not enough. With the heat, it will rust out in a matter of years, depending on how much you use it. Mine lasted approx 3 years and I cut it up.

It's a fun project, just a heads up on how long it will last. That's why the good ones are made from old propane tanks.

Thanks! I plan on stripping it and then using ceramic paint to insulate and protect it on the inside as well as the outside.
