Tainted Youth

My son just went out of state for his second year of college.

A young lady invited him to and he attended a Young Democrats meeting.

If a young lady invited me, I would probably would have gone too. ;)

He DID NOT join!!!

Politics aside, after the meeting it was announced there was a party and everyone over 21 to bring beer

FOR THOSE OF YOU UNDER 21 BRING MONEY AND WE WILL GET YOU BEER.

I certainly don't think the Y.D.'s are unique in partying, but if you are sending off your kids to college, please talk to them about the availability of sex, drugs and alcohol and resist the temptations.

Look children: this is all I’m gonna say about drugs. Stay away from them. There’s a time and a place for everything and it’s called college.

How am I supposed to make the availability of sex, drugs and alcohol sound like a bad thing?

Rock and roll necessary to complete the package.

seriously though... all that should have been covered round bout the time of high school when buddies have cars and parties start to feature these undesirable elements of nefarious nature and less in the way of scary movies and board games. instill a strong foundation, explain repeatedly the consequences repeatedly and repeatedly. so when temptation strikes .... that wiggling and insistent portion of the conscience protester in the back of his or her brain will so "hey buddy this is no good for you and you know better and you know you gotta live with the results of these actions nevermind what these people think of you right now"... and hope for the best cause he's legal now.

all that bein said.. better now to *mildly* experiment and suffer a temporary setback than when he's got a job/wife/kids/mortgage on the line and suffers a decade+ setback to living his life the way he wants

There are a lot of things that really need to be said to a kid off to college. Don't forget to remind him, for example, that his goal is a degree that will land him a job in a very bad economy. Remind him that the wrong sort of partying could ruin his life, from failing a drug test on his job interview to failing out due to drinking to legal troubles caused by a woman who decided that she didnt really mean to get drunk and, um, do other stuff. Remind him that online pictures, comments, and so on that are tied to his real name will be there forever and employers look at/for this stuff. I guess, remind him to have fun but to come out of there ready to work and with a clean record.

It looks to me, that the issue here is the fact the a Campus club (probably recognized by the university and/or chartered through the university) is openly endorsing underaged drinking. If a fraternity or sorority sent out that email and if got back to the dean of student affairs, they would probably be summarily placed on probation.

if you are sending off your kids to Middle School, please talk to them about the availability of sex, drugs and alcohol

There, I fixed that for you, if you wait until they're heading to college they probably know more than you do.

Dad's advice to me.... "Have fun, get an education, don't come home with a tattoo, and don't call me from jail."

Basically this and "no damn kids".
