While at my home in south Texas, I certainly have enough land for this and my family is intending shortly to buy a few acres across the road, I have to say . . . NO, it's never crossed my mind.

The closest thing to it that I have ever REMOTELY considered, some catastrophe happens and everything run by technology shuts down for a few months or some-such like that, is that (down there, at least) I have 22 acres to live on, a river literally in my back yard, and 300 acres of wildlife preserve less than 300 yards from my door--I could survive until things got fixed.

Survivalblog.com is the site to check out. pretty comprehensive, Mr Rawles is very respected. Its simply about being self sufficient nothing more. I wouldnt mind living in the middle of no where with no bills and nobody to bust my :shake:.

Considered having more land and being a little less urban? Of course. more as a nicer better way of life.

Considered some sort of survivalist commune? Not even a little bit. Sounds like a pretty bad idea to me actually. If the proverbially fecal matter were to hit the fan one of the prime targets of a military/government trying to disarm the people and impose martial law would be that commune of EBR toting survivalist. Such a group would be far higher on the radar than that guy and his wife who have 50 acres and a garden plot up the road.

While I won't deride you for making yourself vulnerable and posting this question... no, I have never thought about a commune type situation.

Like other have stated, though, I have definitely thought about having my own land and prepping my survival skills if Kroger, Publix, et al were no longer around. I'm 25 and started my insurance agency just shy of 2 years ago. Hopefully by the time I'm 35 my wife and I will be able to pick out and buy our "homestead". We'd like between 50 and 80 acres with a good sized town 20-45 minutes away. By the time we're 45 or so, we hope to have enough money to begin building our "castle". We're going for a target sq footage of about 4,500. I mean, you gotta have a full recording studio, right?! Anyways, I want a concrete poured center room roughly 18'x30' or so in size. This will be more of a tornado shelter than anything else. The first 10' deep will be general food storage, etc with a very strong door. Through that, a vault door into the gun room, which will be full of all kinds of nice revolvers, and plenty of SHTF, TEOTWAWKI, yadda yadda EBRS, shotties, etc. If we have the money, I'd love to build a 50' indoor pistol range with 4 lanes, and have a reloading room just off of it. I hate working up loads, and then having to test them at the range when I get time, and with all these people looking at me like I'm weird while I'm sitting there writing and they think I should be shooting!

While my mind hasn't gone as far as yours, I'm probably a little closer to your idea than many others here. The funny thing is, I've never had the opportunity to hunt yet and have never killed anything other than bugs and the lizards I used to shoot with my BB gun in the backyard in Miami as a kid. I hope to change all that soon and learn to hunt. I am also working on my gardening skills wand want to be able to provide in that regard if need be.

Let's say the poo did hit the bladed air mover. I think I would be OK riding it out at my place. I would let family (parents, bro's family, sis' family) and one particular set of very close friends stay with us, and they could help work the land, etc, while they are there. But while I set up a place for all of them to live and have them move down IN CASE bad stuff happens? No way... I love 'em all, but I don't like them THAT much!!:D

I think having several acres for gardening, livestock, and hunting is a great idea myself......that's why I live out here in the sticks on 34 acres.

But......gotta say the compound thing sounds a little "waco" to me :D

Not to mention a certain way to draw the attention of the same cutthroats who burned Waco and assasinated Randy Weavers wife

I think communal compound and conservative are in direct opposition to each other. Are they not. we believe in personal freedom and responsibility, not give up all my rights to live in some socialist compound.

I dunno about all, but I do have two spare bedrooms. Good luck finding it though--the directions include both "turn off the paved road" and "our road doesn't have a name." :D

Well said and something I can easily agree with.

I wonder if people in this type of commune would think that state and federal laws no longer apply to them simply because they are all together now

Really, what would the point be? A bunch of dudes with AR-15s, maybe even a few class 3 weapons for doomsday? Military has airpower and more mortars than them. FAIL.
