Only the mags are really worth it. Even the speed loader isn't a speed loader in same sense as say the Uplula.

However, though I wanted to buy American if I could for my carry pistol, I actually chose the XD (original subbie) for several reasons, not the least being the grip safety -- been carrying daily for several years now, and it still provides an extra layer of now almost subconscious comfort. The two visual and tactile loaded/cocked indicators are nice, too.

Also, at least at the time, there were some XD torture tests available comparable to the Glock that weren't available for the M&P. Also, the compact M&P hadn't yet appeared.

Though I carry my Kahr PM a lot, too, with none of the above features, so it's not cast in stone that my carry gun must have these features.

Between the XDm and the M&P, I'd go with a Glock!

Second choice would be whichever of the two fit my hands the best. Especially if you can find a couple to actually shoot before buying. The XD is a Croatian knock-off of Glocks, with a weird grip safety. I would have bought one for $150 less than the Springfield when they were called the HS-2000 and imported by a company in Knoxville just to bang around with. Springfield has done a redesign of the gun into the XDm, which I admit is a very good looking gun and comes with great accessories. However, it is more expensive, larger, heavier, and has a higher bore axis than the comparable Glock. The M&P's feel good to me, and I really like the M&P Pro models.

I'd also throw in a recommendation to look at a Ruger SR9 brand new for less than any of the above. Great ergonomics, and mine shoots very well indeed.

I shot both side by side before I made a purchase. I ended up going M&P because of the recoil. I was looking at compact .40's and the higher bore axis made the XD much snappier and less manageable. It all came down to which I felt would be the better tool for the job. I equate this like a snap on vs proto vs mac vs matco vs sk vs kt vs craftsman. Everyone will have their opinions as to which is better but in the end they all get the job done so get the one that you are most comfortable with and fits your budget.

To each his/her own, of course, but I had a Glock22, traded it for the XDm 40 full size. Haven't regretted it,

except, wish I had waited for the compact version. Still carry a Glock22 as a duty weapon, Dept. issue.

Never tried the M&P, but like the XDm features better. Agreed, I'm not a fan of a grip safety either.

Eeew, comparing Snap-on and Mac to Proto and SK is like comparing a SIG to a Phoenix.

As a confirmed Glockster, (I have more than I'd like to admit) my all-time best ergonomic is the SR9. And the last I'd part with is the SIG 220.

I wouldn't go that far, I'e broken far more snap on and mac then I have my craftsman, sk, or proto tools. To be honest the only thing I like about some of the snap on and mac or matco are the socket wrenches because of the tighter gearing. Other than that they are just ok. You better have 3 or 4 of the main sizes (10mm, 12mm, etc) cause I was breaking 1 or 2 a week and got tired of waiting for the truck. For the money you can't beat the good ole craftsman sockets and you can go to sears any time to get a replacement, which rarely happens.

Back to the original topic. Go shoot them side by side and then make your decision. While you may like the features or feel of a gun it all comes down to which you handle best.

I've owned all three, XD, M&P and Glocks and I'm a Glock armorer. The XD I bought new broke on the 3rd mag of ammo I was running through it before I left the gun shop (G&L) they exchanged it for a M&P. The slide stop broke off, probably doesn't happen very often but it did happen. Then I got into Glocks, love the G19 and bought a new gen4 G17 for IDPA but after a summer of shooting and 3 different trigger connectors I still was shooting low left and didn't like the way it felt in my hand. The I decided to buy a M&P Pro 9mm 5" and have shot it all summer in IDPA and it is and outstanding gun, I shoot it very well and the Apex comp trigger is awesome. I just bought the M&P9c for carry and love it. I do not own any Glocks or XD's. I do own 2 M&P pistols and a M&P15T AR. Your mileage may differ.

To the OP, shoot all 3 and buy what feels right in your hand and shoots the best for you!!!!! COOP

I've owned an XDm 3.8 in 9mm, and currently own an MP45c. Both are quality firearms. The XDm does have a little nicer finish, but the MP's lower bore axis really makes it a joy to shoot. The XDm was not bad to shoot, but didn't stay in the stable, as I never could get completely comfortable with it. That being said, it's not harder to shoot, and shot quite well. The MP just feels like it has better balance.

I have owned an XDm 9mm for two years and have loved it. I looked at everything I could afford and for me it was perfect....several hundred rounds through it and not one single issue....ever...easy to hold, easy to aim and easily one of the fastest tear downs of any handgun I have ever encountered. That being said....the M&P is a fine weapon and both will get the job done.

OK here is the run down. i am replacing the ole Beretta 92.

My local gunshop has a XDM 9 mm (od green) new in box $585

They also have a Smith & Wesson M&P with trijicon sight and a threaded barrel $609.

My question is which one would you buy and why.

I can tell you what I did do! I had used M&P9L, XDM, and a FN something (all in 9 mm) at a local gun store. I fired all 3, side by side. I took the M&P home, the other 2 went back into the case. Everyone is different, all I did was to select the 1 that worked the best for me. I think all of them are comrable weapons (all polymer frames). I just took the one I did the best with; you pick the one that does the best for you.

OP may have already made a decision but just in case...

I have an M&P 9c and am very satisfied with it. I have shot a buddy of mines XD .40 and have no regrets as I was originally looking at an XDm 9mm. I'll beat the same horse that has already been mentioned multiple times, it came down to feel and the M&P just feels more comfortable to me. I think CCA has all of them available to try out so you might take a trip there and give them a try if you haven't already made a purchase.

I've owned one but shot both. I still have my XD-9. It's been flawless. Spare mags are not that expensive. Last time I looked (which has been a year or maybe a little longer), the spare M&P mags were ridiculously priced.

That said, they both shoot well, but I love the way the M&P feels in my hand.

This will probably come down to you shooting both and deciding from there. You can't go wrong with either IMO.
