Seeking wisdom for .308 optic

Recommended Posts

Just wondering your recommendations for an optic on a m4 profile in .308? First and foremost it needs to be easy on my wallet, have enough magnification to reach out to 200 meters or so, but still let me use my iron sights and hold minute of bad guys with the recoil from actual use? Any and all opinions welcomed. Thanks!

What’s your budget?

A flat top will allow you to remove the scope to use your iron sights, but they can’t be on there while using a conventional scope.

I have three options for my .308 Panther. A Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40 LR, a Leupold VX-I 3-9x40, and an Aimshot Relex.

Obviously the MOA capability of the three coupled with the rifle, and my abilities are across the board.

Depends on your application. My 3X9 would make a good hunting scope, my 6.5 X 20 will easily out shoot it at 200-300 meters target shooting, but at 20X I doubt you could find and acquire a deer unless he stood still for a while.

However, I’m not a hunter, and have no desire to ever use an iron sight on a long range rifle.

until i can remove a couple irons from the fire, i have no optic budget. right now, it has the standard front sight/gas block and a pretty good rear right set up. i dropped my aimpoint comp 2 on for now it's not zero but will cowitness, which isn't helping my urge to keep it in cqb/battle ready configuration with the quad rail, light, etc. but at the same time, i don't want to put that short leash on my big dog .308. i'm going to have to say to y'all what i say to my wife when i look at it with the aimpoint. honey, you're supposed to tell me it won't look right unless it's an ACOG! all kidding aside, i don't want to drop that kind of cheddar in the midst of a custom handgun build. if any of you more experienced rifle guys or ladies can think of something, like i said, im all ears! thanks for the advice so far! i look forward to researching more and hearing what you have to say. when i do decide, tgo'ers will be the first to know! please keep the advice coming.

Cry now or cry later.

Leupold or Nikon

A 3-9x50 is plenty.

It is really hard to beat the value and quality of Nikon and Leupold, especially in their mid-range models. I also like what I have seen from Vortex. Agree 100% on the magnification range. Also, don't cheap out on mounting hardware.

I think on my next build, I am going to try one of the 45* off-set mounts. That allows a co-witnessed non-magnified sight, and offset scope.
