Remington 700

Remington 700s are very popular and have been for years; they are also attractive in appearance. However I would buy a Ruger Hawkeye in .308. The .308 will do everything the '06 will do except maybe launch 220g bullets at decent velocity. The Rugers have better ejectors, better extractors, stronger bolt bodies, integral dovetail mount bases, and better 3 position safety. TTT

WAIT!!! Bass Proshop has Browning A-Bolt II's on sale for $499.97 Brown Synthetic Stock, Detachable Mag, Glass Beaded with free floating Barrel. Normally $699.99! I'm a fan of Remmington 700's, but not sure I would pass on a Browning if I was looking for a long term hunting rifle. While supplies last and I'm sure this won't last long!

I like my 700, but I LOVE my X Bolt. Browning rifles are great.

Beware of the ADL. Most have a blind magazine, which means he will have to work the bolt and chamber/extract each round individually. Not the end of the world, but it gets old. Hard-core types argue that a blind magazine allows for a slightly more rigid stock, thus increasing accuracy, but this is splitting hairs. Rifles with bottom-ejection floorplates have a hinged door that allows all rounds to fall into the shooter's hand (except the one that's chambered).

+1 to whoever said .30-06 is more widely available.

I just called him and told him to go get it. Today. Now he needs a decent scope…

Okay, this ^ was yesterday. Now it's today. Did he mind you like a good son? Has he taken pictures yet. You KNOW we're all like a woman in a shoe store, we wanna see EVERYTHING!

He wound up ordering the 700 SPS SS .308 from Buds, shipping to Triune Saddle Shop (see post 18 for that story). Order status shows "Shipping" as of yesterday afternoon, but no tracking number yet.

Never been impressed with Leupolds over Nikon. I wanted to by the Leupold because it was American made but the Nikon's always seem nicer and I have never had a problem. I have a 3-9 Monarch I bought in the mid 90s that has been on several guns and it has never given me a problem.
I have a number of leos that are going on 50 years old, many of them. Every one is as good as the day it was made. I only have 1 modern scope, on my AR, as the old ones do not have enough correction to be so high off the barrel. I do not know if they still have this much quality or not, but the old ones sure were built to last. I have nothing negative to say about any other brand, but it would be nice to see how the modern stuff (leo included!) works after a few decades. Esp the ones with electronics.
