What Could This Be?

I was walking through our property and came across this on a tree and I have no idea what could have caused this! I did not notice any other trees with this type of scrape on it, it was not caused by a tractor or 4 wheeler and it was about 4 feet off the ground. My only guesses is that it was a weird scrap from a buck or its insect related.

looks like a maple tree, if it's within 100 yds of water i'd say it's beaver, that's one of their fave woods, though a little high for initial rounding, it is time for winter habitat building. if no water nearby it's possibly porcupine.

We have porcupines?

Yep.

What did you see at the base of the tree? Small pieces of bark, wood chips, fine dust, nothing?

Porcupine was my first guess. I have seen beavers cut trees that high, or higher, but only when they were standing on a few feet of snow. ;)

Haha, great responses! Not a beaver or porcupine for sure. Its too high up and it didn't have consistent teeth marks. My vote is the Chupacabra B)

Sorry that was me. I was taking a leak and bumped into the tree. I'll try to be more careful next time.

after doing a little research, I have been able to determine that it is, without a doubt, the territorial markings of a band of flying butt monkeys from Uranus. You may want to avoid the area.
