get a 6 inch. The additional velocity does not matter on the range but if you are looking to shoot at deer, you will want to have it. Also the longer sight radius lets you hit stuff farther away easier, and the extra length is better suited for a scope if you ever go that route, all of those make the longer one a better deer pistol IMHO.

For a carry gun I'd say 3"" to 4", but for a field, range hunting gun in .357 I think the 6" is a better choice. For a hunting gun in .357 magnum I'd almost rather have an 8" barrel because of my experence with an 8 3/8" M-27, it made a lot of difference.

I would agree with those above and say 6 inch for your purposes. If you never ever intend to carry concealed, why not get a barrel with longer sight radius and more velocity?

I cannot think of a more versatile firearm than a 6" barrel .357 revolver. It will do almost anything you ask of it. And with a good, stiff .357 JHP load, it will easily take deer at moderate ranges (under 100 yards) as long as you are capable of putting the bullet where it belongs.
