Thanks JG55. That is a good contrast.

Continuing the theme, Mitt Romney at 22 was coming back from being a missionary in France (draft deferrment) to go back to college (another draft deferrment) before later drawing a high draft number.

Apologies editorializing, but seems that Mitt has looked like a yuppie dweeb his entire life!

Ron Paul was just entering med school at age 22 but was an AF flight surgeon by age 28. He wasn't a military pilot but got a private license around that time. Ron was drafted but at least he didn't try to weasel out.

There are few web pictures of a young Herman Cain. This one may be Morehouse College but perhaps high school.

At age 22 he had just received a math degree and was starting a gig computer programming ballistics for the Dept. of the Navy. I don't know if he was in the service. Maybe working for the Dept. of the Navy was good enough to avoid the draft at that time? He was simultaneously persuing a Computer Science MS at Purdue, so maybe it was a student deferrment. The draft was winding down by the time he graduated Purdue.

The obama pic has been found to be from age 18 and perry may not be exactly 22, there is some guesswork being done on the actual photo dates. As I recall important DOD subcontractors can avoid the draft but their work has to be important enough, not just run of the mill stuff. Early computer science probably counted.
